Snyder, -- Edward, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Snyder, was born in Waterloo County, Ont., on Dec. 27, 1873; departed this life at his home in Elmira, Ont., on Feb. 8, 1955; aged 81 y. 1 m. 11 d. On May 22, 1907, he was united in marriage to Melinda Brubacher, who preceded him in death in 1939. He is survived by 3 children (Walter and Addison of Elmira, and Pearl--Mrs. Wilfred Meyer, of Waterloo), also 8 grandchildren, and one brother (Oscar, Waterloo). He was a member of the Elmira Mennonite Church. Funeral services were conducted in the funeral chapel at Elmira on Feb. 10, with Oliver D. Snider in charge. Interment was made in Snyder's church cemetery, Bloomingdale, Ont.

Daniel S. Snyder, "was born December 5th, 1837. He was educated at the Bloomingdale schools and when old enough to give a helping hand on his father's extensive farm, the subject of our sketch had to put by his books and slate and go and drive the plow. Although devoting his attention chiefly to the agricultural pursuits, yet he found some spare moments which he very beneficially employed in posting himself in all political and municipal matters pertaining to his country. Soon after his moving to Woolwich Township he entered the council of that township and was councillor, deputy reeve and reeve in succession for a number of years. While in the council he was more noted for assiduous attention to business and a watchful care of the interests of the township than for oratorial display. He always gave his views, in plain but forcible language. During the many years he served in the council he was chairman of various committees, such as roads, bridges, claims, etc., and such was the confidence placed in him by his compeers that his reports and recommendations were generally adopted. In his habits he is plain and simple and at all times willing to accommodate and serve any person that requires his aid. On November 4th, 1860, he was married to Nancy, daughter of David and Mary (Mosser) Reist. She was born December 26th, 1840. Soon after their marriage they moved to Woolwich Township, about two miles north of Conestogo where he owns a farm of over 200 acres of land. To them were born eleven children"

After years of suffering, patiently endured, the wife of Mr. Dan. S. Snider, who lives about 3 ½ miles south-east of Elmira, passed away on Monday. She was a daughter of the late David Reist and was highly respected by all who knew her. She leaves to mourn her loss a sorrowing husband and seven children, five sons and two daughters. Several children predeceased her. Her remains were interred in the Mennonite Cemetery at Bloomingdale yesterday (Wednesday) forenoon. The funeral was largely attended.

David Reist, "the eighth member of John and Susannah (Huber) Reist's family, was born in Warwick Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, January 21st, 1805. He came to Canada with his parents in 1826 and settled on the farm now possessed by Henry Stroh near Bridgeport, Ontario. Here they remained only one year, thence they moved on the farm now possessed by Joseph Reist. On January 10th, 1830, he was married to Mary, daughter of Peter and Elizabeth (Wanner) Mosser. She was born November 9th, 1812, and died near Kossuth, September 3rd, 1866. He is still living and enjoying good health for a man of such an age. He has his home with his son-in-law, Daniel S. Snyder, of Woolwich Township. Soon after their marriage they moved on the farm lately owned by Carl Zuber, near New Germany, Ontario. Here they resided until the year 1842, then they moved on a farm near Kossuth, now in possession of his son, Peter. Here they resided until her death in 1866. Since then he has had his home with his children. Their family consisted of eleven children"

Jacob (Yoch) Schneider, "the seventh member of his father's family, was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, January 24th, 1764. In 1790 he was married to Mary, daughter of Christian and Mary (Scherch) Erb (No. 2777). She was born March 2nd, 1766 and died in Waterloo County, Ontario, near Bloomingdale, August 27th, 1835. In 1806 he, with his wife and family, his brother Christian and family, and others, moved to Canada and settled in Waterloo County. Old Yoch, as he was generally called, settled on the east bank of the Grand River, near Bloomingdale, on the farms now possessed by Benjamin S. Snyder, Josiah S. Snyder, and Rev. Menno B. Bowman where he was engaged in farming and acquiring real estate so as to be able to give a large farm to each one of his children. His family consisted of ten children and were all married save one, and resided within the same neighborhood. He died February 6th, 1853,."

Jacob Snider: The Last Will and Testament of Jacob Snider, late of the Township of Waterloo.

… I, Jacob Snider, Sr. of the Township of Waterloo, Yeoman, being of sound and perfect mind and memory…I give and bequeath to all my sons and daughters, share and share alike, all my freehold and personal property of what kind and nature soever, except my farm, Levi Bechtel now living on for which I hold the deed for which is Lot No. 69 in Waterloo aforesaid, the said Levi Bechtel is to have the benefit of the said Lot during his natural life, then the said lot is to fall to his children, and all the share and shares arising out of my property after my decease which falls to my daughter Magdalene, wife of Levi Bechtel and will remain for the heirs of daughter Magdalene, except for the yearly interest, which Levi Bechtel was to have during his natural life. They were married in September, 1819."

Sad Affair near Hespeler
From our own Correspondent

A most melancholy event took place on Sunday morning near the R.R. track about 1-1/2 miles above Hespeler. An old man said to be about 86 years of age of the name of Musser, occupied two apartments by himself, contiguous to the farm house in which his daughter, son-in-law and family resided. It was customary for some of the family before retiring for the night to visit the old man's rooms. On looking in on Sunday night at bedtime, he was found asleep and left undisturbed. About 2 o'clock on Sunday morning the family was aroused by the scream of one of the children who had been awaked by the suffocating influence of smoke in the house. They had barely time to make their escape from the house before it was enveloped in flames, and without securing even sufficient clothing. The rooms occupied by the old man were already burnt down, and on Dr. Swan, being called, all that could be found of the old man were a few charred bones, which were collected into a box of about a foot square. The fire is supposed to have been entirely accidental, but how it originated cannot be ascertained. Dr. Swan supposes from the remains of the old man being found near the door of the apartment in which he slept, that he had been suffocated and fallen down in an attempt to gain the door. An inquest was held on Monday when a verdict in accordance with the above facts were returned.

Elizabeth M. Wanner, "was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, July 25th 1781. She was married to Peter Mosser who was born April 6th, 1785, and died July 28th, 1872. They resided about a mile north east of Hespeler, on a farm adjoining that of David Pannebecker. Their family consisted of eight children"
