    AMONG THE FARMERS.

    John L. Weber.

In my sketches about the well known and prominent farmers of Woolwich township I find by reference to my note book the above name was omitted. A sketch of Woolwich would be incomplete without the name of Mr. Weber, for it is seldom we find a more popular citizen, or successful farmer. He lives in a beautiful home on the Grand river, near St. Jacobs, and owns and works a farm of two hundred acres. He has lived on this farm since his father purchased it in 1860. Mr. Weber was born in the township of Ellis, Perth county, on June 12, 1844, and has followed farming all his life. He was married to Miss Christiana, daughter of Daniel Kesselring, three miles southwest of Waterloo. She was born in Waterloo township, on Feb. 3, 1848. They have eight children, viz: William K, born April 5, 1572; Sarah Ann, January 12, 1874; Amanda, December 15, 1875; Clara, June 15, 1878; Nelson, July 22, 1880; Lizzie, November 11, 1882; Cranston, May 11, 1885; Malinda, November 8, 1887 All are living at home except William K., who is engaged in the hardware business.

Mr. Weber is a staunch Reformer and a devoted member of the Evangelical Association. He has served several terms as public school trustee and was elected a member of the township. council at the last election. As a practical farmer he ranks with the best of them in Woolwich township. Last season he produced 3,097 bushels of grain and eighty loads of hay, including the feeding of a number of fine export cattle. He also keeps several fine thoroughbred Shorthorns Duke of Alma, 24260, a splendid animal, carried off first premium at Berlin and Elmira last year. Seraphina Rose, red in color, calved March. 15, 1896; Red Rose, 26949, calved July 18, 1894; Lady Clare, light roan heifer, all superb animals. I noticed a number of fine thoroughbred Berkshire bogs, among them a row of enormous proportions. Mr. Weber also keeps a flock of fine sheep, his favorite breed being the Shropshire Downs. His horses are also in splendid condition, and in his stable I noticed a span of very handsome light bays that would undoubtedly carry off first premium in their class were they put on exhibition at the fair. He has abundance of feed, and by the looks of his stock it is not used sparingly. The stranger who sojourns beneath his roof will always find a cordial welcome to partake of the abundance of good things of this life.
