WALLENSTEIN - Enoch Horst, 73, former Millbank farmer, died today at his home in Wallenstein. Born in Woolwich township, he had come to Wallenstein only about two months ago. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Eli Horst. His wife, the former Eliza Martin died 35 years ago.

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Aaron (Levina) Lichty. Crosshill and Anna, Lydia Ann and Louise at home; five sons, Elam of Millbank; Enoch of Linwood; Isaiah and Elias at home and Henry of Newton; one brother, Eli of Alma; one sister, Sarah Horst of near Waterloo.
The body is at the Dreisinger funeral parlor pending funeral arrangements.

David Horst, "son of David and Anna (Weber) Horst, was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, February 28th, 1804. He came to Canada when a young man and was engaged in Waterloo County, Ontario. On December 4th, 1832, he was married to Magdalena, daughter of Peter and Anna (Zimmerman) Martin. She was born April 14th, 1814. Soon after their marriage they moved on part of lot No. 20 German Company's Tract, Woolwich Township, about a mile or so west of Heidelberg Station, where they resided until his death which took place May 15th, 1884. She is still living and has her home with her son, Menno, who resides on the old homestead. To them was born a numerous family"

HORST. - On the 15th of May at his residence in Waterloo Co., Ont., of old age, Bro. David Horst, aged 80 years, 3 months and 17 days. He was a member of the Mennonite Church. A wife, children and 32 grandchildren mourn their loss, which we hope to be his eternal gain. He was buried at Martin's Meeting-house. Services were held by Elias Snyder and Abraham Martin, from Rev. 3 : 19. May the Lord comfort the sorrowing friends.

HORST - On the 22d of February, 1897, in Waterloo Co., Ont., of cancer, Sister Magdalena Martin, widow of the late David Horst, aged 82 years, 10 months, 8 days. Buried on the 25th, in the Martin graveyard, north of Waterloo, where Paul Martin and Bishop Abraham Martin preached to a large concourse of friends. Deceased was a member of the Mennonite church for many years and was highly respected. She was born in Earl Twp., Lancaster Co., Pa., Apr. 14th, 1814. She came to Canada with her parents in 1819. Dec. 4th, 1832, she was united in marriage to David Horst who died May 15th, 1884. Of their fourteen children, nine survive to mourn the loss of an affectionate mother.

Peter Martin, "was born in West Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, February 26th, 1769. He was married to Anna Zimmerman, December 25th, 1793. She was born February 18th, 1775. He followed farming in his native state, but owing to the poor harvests for several years in succession, together with low wages and many business failures, caused him to make arrangements with his numerous family to move to Canada. Two of his daughters, Barbara, married to David Martin and Maria, married to Christian Zimmerman, remained in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, while the parents with fourteen of their children, together with Daniel Weber and others, moved to Canada in 1819. They, at their arrival here, settled first on the farm now owned by Dilman Shantz and the heirs of the late Abraham Groff, but not finding this to their taste they finally located on the farm now possessed by Menno Gingerich. Here they resided until their deaths. He died March 2nd, 1831, and she died December 12th, 1836. They had a family of seventeen children, all of whom were married."

Martin Meeting House

According to Isaac Horst, "Martins meeting house was the first of the Old Order places of worship to be built. A meeting house is reported to have been built in 1830; burial was begun in the adjoining cemetery in 1831. Martins was aptly named. The first three bishops of the area were Martins, all descended from the pioneer, Peter Martin. The land on which the house stands was formerly owned by Martins (1979: 376)." Peter Martin, Jr. purchased 220 acres of land from his brother, Henry Martin, on May 8, 1824. Apparently he set aside four acres for a meeting house and burying ground at that time. The first burial is reported to have been that of Peter Martin, Sr., who died March 2, 1831. The meeting house was enlarged in 1900.

John Weber was the first minister, followed by Abraham W. Martin, Samuel Weber, Paul Martin, Tobias Martin and Urias Martin. At one time surrounded by countryside, the meeting house and cemetery are now completely encircled by the commercial development brought about by the rapid expansion northward of the city of Waterloo.

...Martin was 62 when died in 1831, just 12 years after coming to Canada, but his important role in local history was not forgotten. His home doubled as the Martin's Church before the Martin's Meeting House on King Street North was completed.

The meeting house still stands today, next to the Martin's cemetery that holds Peter Martin's remains. Across King Street was the Martin's School (SS21), in use until 1972. It's gone now.

Because of his large family, 17 children in all, Martin was once described as "probably the most vigorous progenitor in the history of the region." His story is told in a booklet Thou Art Peter, published in 1983 by the Mennonite historian Isaac Horst of Mount Forest.....

In 1807 he in company with Benjamin Eby and wife, Joseph Schneider, wife and family, Peter Erb and wife, David Eby, Samuel Eby, and others, came to Canada and arrived at what is now Berlin, Waterloo County, on June 21st. Here Abraham Weber located on lot No. 15, German Company's Tract. His buildings were located on the west side of King Street, a little to the south of the Grand Trunk Railway where now is the beautiful residence and lawn of W. H. Bowlby. Soon after his arrival he was married to Elizabeth Baumann who was born October 16th, 1788, and died June 12th, 1847. They raised a family of three children"

On the 19th of February, in Waterloo township, Waterloo Co., C. W., of , Bro. ABM. WEBER, aged 79 years, 4 mo., and 17 days. He was born in Lancaster Co., Pa., in 1787, and went to Canada in 1807. He lived and died a faithful member of the Mennonite Church. He was buried a (sic) Eby's burying ground. Funeral sermons were preached by Joseph Hege and George Schmidt, from Heb. 13;14.

Back to 1807 and 20-year-old Abraham Weber. He built his farmstead in the centre of his lot, close to 2017's King and Victoria. All vestiges of Weber's buildings have disappeared but one incidental structure lingers. At some point, Abraham gave refuge and work to an ex-slave named Levi Carroll. Levi and his family are among the earliest identifiable blacks in the German Company Tract. They appear in a later, well-known photograph from the 1880s featuring their home, the original 1820 Waterloo schoolhouse. It was then located on Lot 16 near the collegiate but is now in Waterloo Park.

Abraham left the farm in the late 1830s when son Abraham C. took over. Then, in 1855, the Grand Trunk Railway route split Lot 16 in two, so Abraham C. sold most of his land to George Grange who had the property surveyed and began selling industrial and residential lots.

David Eby, "was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, February 23rd, 1785. The house in which he and the Rev. Benjamin Eby made arrangements in regard to the moving to Canada is still standing and occupied by a son of Henry E. Brubacher. On June 21st, 1807, David Eby, in company with Benjamin Eby and wife, Joseph Schneider and wife, Peter Erb and wife, Daniel Eby, Samuel Eby, Daniel Erb, and others arrived at George Eby's who resided on the farm now owned and occupied by Jacob B. Shantz, one-half mile south-east of Berlin. He made his home for a few months with Peter Erb for whom he cleared ten acres of forest. Peter Erb had settled on the west side of the Grand River, one mile north of Bridgeport. David Eby was always happy and merry, even while at his work clearing away the large trees of the dense forest he was either singing or whistling most of the time. On May 8th, 1810, he married Elizabeth Bechtel who was born March 5th, 1787, and died January 15th, 1844. They resided on lot No. 32, German Company's Tract, where he died April 1st, 1860. They raised a family of eleven children"

Erb Street (David Eby) Mennonite Church

Early services which began around 1837 were held in private homes. Land at the corner of Erb Street and Hallman Road, where the present-day cemetery is located, was donated by David Eby Sr. on July 14, 1851; a red brick church known as David Eby's Church was built in the same year. The first minister in the new church was Jacob M. Oberholtzer who served from 1852 to 1874. He was followed by Elias Schneider (1874-1889), Jonas Snider (1892-1900), Newton Weber (1921-1923), and Noah Hunsberger (1923-1929).

Due to a difference of opinion in the David Eby congregation, Sunday School classes were held at first in a private home, that of Levi Groff, beginning in 1887. The dissension which resulted culminated in a division in the church in 1889; the minister, Elias Schneider, and the deacon, Menno S. Shantz, left the church and joined with the Old Order Mennonites of Woolwich Township. The following year, 1890, saw the commencement of "Edification Meetings", which were held in the homes of members of the David Eby congregation. These meetings later became the Young People's Bible Meetings.

By the beginning of the twentieth century, it was recognized that the church building was either in need of repair or in need of complete replacement. Consideration was given to building a new church on the same site or on a site on King Street North. A decision was made to accept from Samuel S. Snider the donation of a parcel of land which was also on Erb Street, but nearer town. Excavation of the foundation for the new church began in the Spring of 1902. A dedication service was held on August 17, 1902. A parsonage was built in 1929 on land donated by Herbert Snider, the son of Samuel Snider. The church building was renovated and enlarged in 1949-1950; a dedication service was held on April 9, 1950. Further renovations were made in 1974..

A mission was begun by Rev. Christian Holl shortly after his arrival in Berlin on May 9, 1839, and a class (or congregation) was organized several months later on August 29, 1839 by Bishop John Seybert of the Evangelical Association during a camp meeting held at David Erb's farm near Lexington. John Hoffman was the Berlin class leader; his brother, Jacob , was class leader for the Waterloo-Lexington congregation.<sup>1a

Historic Building:
Two story log house covered with clapboard was built in 1842. The logs were dressed down to 7" and by 1851 was covered in clapboard The date 1842 was carved into one of the second story logs. The house was on land in 1981 to be redeveloped and has probably been demolished.

David married Elizabeth Bechtel 8 May 1810. Elizabeth (daughter of Rev. Joseph Bechtel and Magdalena Allebach) was born 5 Mar 1787, , Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania; died 15 Jan 1844; was buried , First Mennonite Cemetery, Kitchener, Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada. [Group Sheet]

Elizabeth Bechtel "the eldest in family, was born March 5th, 1787, and died January 15th, 1844. On May 8th, 1810, she was married to David Eby, who was born February 23rd, 1785, and died April 1st, 1860. They resided two miles west of the town of Waterloo where they both died. Their family consisted of eleven children".
