    ___________

    ST. JACOBS GLUE CO.

One of the leading industries of St. Jacobs is its glue factory, which has been in operation for about twenty-five years; but not on as large a scale as it is now by the present company. The latter was formed about nine years ago. Mr. C Thiel, the popular manager and overseer of the plant, has been identified with it ever since it was established in St. Jacobs. It was quite a surprise to me when I visited this factory a few days ago and found it entirely free from the repulsive odors generally supposed to prevail in the immediate vicinity of most glue factories. In this case, however, the entire absence of offensive odors is due to two things, viz: the interior of the factory is kept clean as far as practicable and only the trimmings from the hides, &c of slaughtered animals are used. This is not always the case in glue manufacture, however, as many factories use the refuse from deceased animals that are often already in the advanced state of decomposition. Mr. Thiel had just returned from New York where he had purchased twelve carloads of hide trimmings. This comes from some part of Asia and is of a much finer quality, it being used in the manufacture of their best grade of glue. They manufacture two kinds, furniture and emery glue And the lot that I examined was of a very fine quality indeed, and I must say it cannot be surpassed. They also purchase a good deal of material from Chicago, which is used in their cheaper grades. They ship to all parts of the Dominion, there always being a good demand for their production, of which they manufacture about 150,000 lbs per annum, and employ about twelve men in the winter season when the factory is in full operation. As many are, no doubt unacquainted with the manner in which glue is manufactured, I will undertake to give a brief explanation. In the first place this factory has a 35 horse power engine and a 70 horse power boiler. The hide trimmings, or material required is first soaked in large tanks and then in vats of lime, after which it is subjected to an acid process and then put in large boilers and reduced to a liquid state. From the latter it is taken to the cooling room where it soon reaches almost the, consistency of rubber. It is then cut up into square cakes of 10 x 6 inches and which are finally sliced to the thicknesses of about half an inch and then taken to the drying room and placed upon drying racks placed in a long narrow chamber, through which air is forced at a great velocity by a large Disk fan, which makes 900 revolutions per minute. By the drying process these slices become hard and brittle and reduced to the thickness of about a sixteenth of an inch. The dried glue is packed in barrels, but this is not done until the glue is broken up into smaller pieces to admit of closer packing. This is accomplished by throwing it into a hopper in which is an ordinary grain separator cylinder making about 3,000 revolutions per minute. The glue is then ready for the barrels and shipment. Mr. Thiel exhibits a thorough knowledge in the manufacture of glue and probably contributes as much towards keeping business moving as any other man in the village. Besides his large interest in the factory he has several fine private residences here where he was raised from boyhood, but he was born in Philipsburg in 1858. His family consists of a wife and five children.
