    ROSS W. VEITCH

    1897-1943 Married: Velma Kennedy - July 1925

    Ross W. Veitch was born in Toronto on May 5, 1897 the son of George Veitch and Annie Welker. He was raised in Plattsville and received his elementary and high school education there. Mr. Veitch was a student at the Stratford Normal School on January 19, 1916 when he enlisted with the 110th Perth Battalion. He went overseas on November 1, 1916, serving with the 38th Ottawa battalion, Cameron Highlanders and receiving a commission as a lieutenant. He returned to Canada in 1919 and resumed his education, completing the course at the Stratford Normal School and then enrolling at McMaster University. After he qualified as a teacher he taught at S.S. No. 7, Wellesley and at S.S. No. 2, Blenheim and S.S. No. 3, Wilmot. Mr. Veitch came to Preston in 1925 as the assistant principal at the Preston Central Public School. He served in this position for six years before acting as principal of the school for ten years. On January 2, 1941 he accepted the position as Preston's postmaster. Mr. Veitch was the fifth man to hold the position since it was created in 1837. Mr. Veitch served the Preston Public Library Board as secretary-treasurer for a number of years and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Preston Branch. He died on April 28, 1943 and is buried in the Preston Cemetery.

    PRESTON. April 29— Funeral services for the late Ross Walker Veitch, who died in the Toronto General Hospital early yesterday morning, have been arranged. The late Mr. Veitch is resting at his home, 854 Queen Street. Funeral service will be held at St. John's Anglican Church on Friday at 3 o'clock. Interment will be in the Preston Cemetery.

    Mr. George Veitch

    Mr. George Veitch passed away at his home in Woodstock on Sunday at the age of 78 years. He had been ill for some time. The deceased was well known in New Hamburg. He was born in Plattsville where he entered the dry goods business and later conducted the store in Haysville. About 25 years ago he returned to Plattsville and was connected with the store now conducted by Mr. J. B. English. For the past five years he was connected with the John White Company in Woodstock. He was a brother-in-law of Messrs. Henry and Thos. G. Walker of the Huron Road. Surviving are his wife, three daughter, Mrs. J. Stephenson, Detroit; Mrs. A. Young, Toronto, and Ina, Cleveland, and one son, Ross, of Preston.

    HAYSVILLE - Mrs. George Veitch, 92, of Haysville, died yesterday after a lengthy illness Born in Wilmot township, she was a member of St. James's Anglican Church and had resided in Toronto, Plattsville and Woodstock. She was the last surviving member of the Thomas Walker family.

    Surviving are one daughter Mrs. Robert (Marie) Lucas, Detroit, Mich.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

    The body will be at the Futher Omand Funeral Home, New Hamburg, until Friday at 1 p.m., when removal will be made to St James's Anglican Church, Huron Road, Haysville, for funeral service at 2:30 p.m. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. W.. A. Jones will officiate.

    WaIker, Thomas. - Came to Canada from Lincolnshire, England, in 1832 at the age of 8, accompanying his father and mother, being their only child. Joseph Walker, the father, immediately took up the 200 acres where Mrs. Thos. Walker now resides, but merely held the title until his son, Thomas, of this sketch, was of age to work it and which he commenced to do about 1845. In 1854 he was married to Maria Illingworth, who still survives at the ripe age of 80 years. Nine children were born to them: Sarah, Mrs. T. B. Puddicombe, William, deceased, Henry of Haysville, Joseph S., Barrister, of London, Annie M., Mrs. Geo. Veitch, Plattsville, Thos. G., on the homestead, Ida E., Mrs. John McCallum, Shakespeare, Fred J., of Stratford, Clara I., at home. The house has been the scene of much hospitality in which both Mr. and Mrs. Walker delighted.

    Mrs. Maria Walker - The death occurred at her home Cedar Lawn, on the Huron Road, Wilmot, of Mrs. Maria Walker, widow of the late Thomas Walker, at the advanced age of 91 years, 10 months and 23 days. The deceased was a daughter of the late William Illingworth, who emigrated to Canada in the early twenties from Yorkshire, England. The late Mrs. Walker was born in Wilmot on the Huron Road and spent her whole life in that community. She was a valued member of the Anglican Church of this Parish and was greatly beloved by all. She was married in 1854 to Thomas Walker, who predeceased her 44years ago. A family of six children are left to mourn her demise, namely, Mrs. George Veitch, Woodstock, Mrs. J.M. McCallum, Ottawa, Henry G. Walker, Huron Road, Fred J. Walker, Leamington, and Thomas and Clara Walker, at home, three of the family predeceased her, Mrs. Thomas B. Puddicombe, of Haysville, Joseph Walker, of London, and William Walker, of California. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. William Kerr, Huron Road. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon from her late home to St. James' Church and Cemetery.

    ILLINGWORTH, Wm. - Arrived in Canada from Yorkshire, England, about 1823, remaining for a time in Waterloo Township, in the meantime taking title to the farm on which John Gingerich now resides at Zurbrigg's Corners. He saw and assisted at the commencement of the Huron Road, which extends from Hamilton to Goderich, and remained with the surveying party until it was finished, clearing his farm in the intervals. He married Annie Ferguson, of Paisley, Scotland, a sister of Mrs. Malcolm Allen. Margaret, Mrs. James Cochrane, Wingham, deceased, Maria, Mrs. Thomas Walker, Huron Road, Martha, Mrs. Samuel Mark, Sarah Ann, Mrs. Wm. Smith, deceased, Hannah, Mrs. Wm. Kerr, Jane, spinster, deceased and William, deceased, were the children. He died in 1891 and is buried at St. James'. He was a strong supporter of the Church and bequeathed a sum of money at his death to the Parish, the interest on which materially assists the cause.
