    Notes:

    William Henry Lorch, former Listowel and Wallace councillor and deputy reeve of Listowel, died Nov. 30 at Listowel Hospital. He was 83.

    Mr. Lorch, a painter by trade, was born in Woolwich Township Aug. 1, 1883, the son of the late Albert Lorch and Mary Oswald. He was married to the former Ada Matilda Koch on Nov. 25, 1908 in Wallace Township.

    Mr. Lorch was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Listowel.
    Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Alfred (Edna) Seller RR 3, Listowel and Mrs. Noah (Alma) Ament, Listowel; a brother, Charles Lorch of Elmira; two sisters, Mrs. Alvin (Mary) Dreisinger, Elmira; Mrs. William (Emma) Adamson, Waterloo; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

    A public funeral service was held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Listowel, at 2 p.m. Dec. 2, with interment in Fairview cemetery. Rev. R.B. Geelhaar, minister of the church, officiated.

    Elmira, Nov. 22 - The death occurred yesterday of Albert W. Lorch, 79, at his home, 32 Centre Street. The deceased had been in poor health for the past two months. He was born Feb. 14, 1861, on a farm in Woolwich Township, one mile northwest of Elmira, where he resided until October, 1927, when he moved to his present home. A public -spirited citizen, Mr. Lorch served two years on the Woolwich Township Council and for many years held the post of township road superintendent. He was a member of St. James Lutheran church and had been for many years a member of the church board.

    His wife, one daughter, the late Mrs. John Westfall, and a son, who died in infancy, also predeceased him. surviving are three sons, Henry of Gowanstown, and Charles and Walter of Elmira, four daughters, (Mary) Mrs. Alvin Dreisinger, Elmira, (Carrie) Ms. Albert N. Hett and (Edith) Mrs. Sylvester Israel, both of Kitchener, and (Emma) Mrs. W. Adamson of Ayton, two brothers, Rudolph, Grand Rapids, Mich., and Edward, New Carlisle, Ind., 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

    The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon with a private service at the home at 2 o'clock, with public service at St. James' Lutheran Church at 2: 30. Burial will be in St. James' Cemetery, Elmira, Rev. L. H. Kalbfleisch will officiate at these services. The body will be at the Dreisinger Funeral Chapel until Saturday afternoon.

    MRS. ALBERT LORCH

    ELMIRA, Sept. 2 - After an illness of about six months, the death occurred on Monday of Mrs. Albert Lorch at her home here. She was born in Woolwich Township 75 years ago and has resided in this district her entire life. Four years ago Mr. and Mrs. Lorch celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. The deceased was a member of St. James' Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid.

    Surviving are her husband, three sons, Henry of Gowanstown, Charles and Walter of Elmira, four daughters, Mrs. Alvin Dreisinger, Elmira, Mrs. (Dr.) A. N. Hett, Kitchener, Mrs. S. Israel, Kitchener, and Mrs. W. Adamson of Ayrton. One daughter, Mrs. J. Westfall, and an infant son predeceased her. Mrs. H. Beckner of Elmira, Mrs. H. Ott of Listowel, sisters, and Jacob Oswald, a brother, also survive. There are fifteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

    The funeral will take place on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the late residence to St. James' Lutheran Church for services and thence to the Elmira Cemetery for interment.

    MR. M. B. OSWALD JOINS THE MAJORITY

    There passed from life unto death, on Sunday, Nov. 13, a respected resident in the person of Mr. Michael B. Oswald. He was one of the pioneers of Woolwich and had reached the ripe old age of 89 years, 2 months and 10 days.

    Mr. Oswald was born in Germany in the year 1832, in Wilgartsweisen, Rhine Phalz, Bavaria. He came to Canada when a youth of 15 years. His parents took up land in Woolwich Township. Mr. Oswald spent 66 years of his long life on the farm.

    On December 22, 1856, he married Miss Philippine Braun and their union was blessed with twelve children, only four of whom are living. Mrs. Oswald died 7 years ago.

    The surviving children are: Mr. Jacob Oswald and Mrs. Albert Lorch, of Elmira, Mrs. Henry Ott, of Listowel and Mrs. Henry Beckner on the old homestead.

    A brother, Mr. Jacob Oswald, of Kitchener, survive him as do also 18 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

    Mr. Oswald was an industrious and intelligent man. He succeeded as a farmer and took a strong interest in every thing that would promote progress. He is credited with having been one of the founders of the Elmira and Woolwich Agricultural Society, was for many years a director and when age overtook him he was, in recognition of his services, made an Honorary President.

    He had lived for sixteen years in Elmira and was a lifelong member of St. James' Lutheran Church.

    His funeral was on Tuesday afternoon held and was largely attended by sorrowing friends. The funeral procession left the home of his son-in-law Mr. Henry Beckner, at 2 o'clock and proceeded to St. James' Church for services, with Rev. John Strempfer officiating; after which interment took place in the St. James' Church Cemetery.
    Among those from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mr. Jacob Oswald, Mr. Henry and Mr. Wm. Oswald, of Kitchener, Mr. Michael Braun of Neustadt, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wells and Mrs. Gerbracht, of Ayton.

    There were presented a number of floral offerings by relatives and friends, including a pillow from the children.

    A good, useful life has closed and his death has called forth for the members of his family the sympathy of the community.

    Another old resident of Elmira passed away early on Monday morning in the person of Philippena Braun, beloved wife of Mr. Michael B. Oswald, The deceased was born in Woolwich in 1839. In December 1856 she was married to Mr. Oswald and they shared the joys and sorrows of life for nearly sixty! years. To them were born 12 children. 6 died young and one after marriage. The following remain to mourn with their father in their hour bereavement: Mary (Mrs. A. Lorch), Eva (Mrs. Henry Ott, of Wallace), Caroline (Mrs. Henry Beckner), Jacob and Philippena who is still at home. There are also 18 grandchildren greatgrandchildren, and 2 sisters, Mrs. Philip Oswald, Elmira, and Mrs. Henry Otterbein, Michigan, and one brother, Jacob Braun, Vancouver. Mrs. Oswald had suffered long from that dread disease, cancer, having been ill in bed the last 14 weeks. Death came as a relief from all sickness and pain. The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon and was attended by a large number of relatives and friends.

    A-1-167 Jacob Braun Letters of Administration by Wilhelmina Braun of the Township of Woolwich, widow of Jacob Braun, late of the Township of Woolwich, Yeoman, deceased, of the goods, chattels rights and credits which were of the aforesaid Jacob Braun, deceased, with Will annexed, and has made proof before the Judge of this Honorable court, that the said Jacob Braun is dead, having died on or about the First day of April, in the year of our Lord one thousand, eight hundred and fifty eight, after first having made his Last Will and Testament, bearing date the 11th day of March 1858, such Will being wanting in the appointment of an Executor or Executors. And whereas the said deceased at the time of his death was possessed of diverse goods, chattels, rights and credits within the said County, the administration whereof belongeth to this court and the above named petitioner, she being the widow of the said deceased and living within this Province and having furnished unto us a bond with security for the due performance of her duty, as such Adminstratrix. Now we do grant unto you, the said Wilhelmina Braun, full power to administer to the estate of the aforesaid Jacob Braun deceased, in accordance with his will annexed and also according to law and faithfully to demand recover and receive the debts which unto the said deceased whilst living and at the time of his death did belong, and to pay the just debts which the said deceased did owe, so far as his goods, chattels and credits will contend and the law shall bind you, hereby requiring you, the said Wilhelmina Braun to establish a just and true inventory of all and singular the personal estate of the said deceased into the Registry of this Court, when you shall be thereunto lawfully required..[The names of Lorenz Steffler and Michl.     [Will of Jacob Braun, translated from the original German] :

    …I, Jacob Braun, Farmer in the Township of Woolwich…First, it is my Will that six weeks after my death a public sale of the cattle, excepting a brown Mare, two cows in the selection, further 6 sheep and 3 hogs (which is the property of my wife) - shall take place, then shall the entire agricultural implements - such as wheat, peas, oats and hay be sold, excepting 4 tons of hay, fifty bushels of wheat, one hundred and fifty bushels of oats and twenty bushels of peas, which is the property of my wife. Further, I direct that the whole household furniture shall be the property of my wife. Then my Will is that out of the proceeds of the effects sold, all at present existing debts shall be paid, and the balance of the money my wife shall receive as her property. Further it is my Will that my wife shall from this day hence, for Twelve years, have the sole management of my two farms, on Lot 49 and Lot 48 : And then it is my will…my son Jacob Braun will have attained his twenty first year - that he shall receive the easterly side of Lot 49 consisting of one hundred and thirty acres of land, more or less, together with the buildings. However, I direct that my wife shall during her lifetime, retain her residence in this new house, namely the two easterly situated rooms, beside the kitchen, situated in the first story. My son Jacob Braun receives the aforesaid piece of land for the round sum of six thousand dollars, but goes in for a child's portion; he is then bound to pay the fourteenth part of said purchase sum annually, to his sisters or legitimate heirs, without interest, but should installments be due, then he must upon being requested, pay the legal interest due. I will that after the expiration of said twelve years. My wife shall annually receive of lot 48, also of lot 49, of each plan one hundred dollars, and the heirs are bound to give her this annually during her lifetime, without any deduction whatever - further, I direct that whereas my three married daughters, Elisabeth, Catharine and Phillipina Braun, at their marriage each receive forty dollars as their portion:- likewise the heir[?] yet under age, namely, Jacob, Eva and Caroline Braun, on becoming of age, each, in the first place to receive forty dollars out of my estate, without lessening their portion of inheritance. Further, I direct that my son Jacob Braun, on becoming of age shall receive one hundred dollars in remembrance of his deceased brother Frederick Braun.
