    Recipes:
    TEA BISCUITS Mrs. Radford

Measure out four cupfuls of patent process flour, put in a sieve, add to the flour an even teaspoonful of soda and two teaspoonfuls of cream tartar and sift the whole through the sieve twice. Rub through the dry ingredients a large tablespoonful of butter. Rub butter thoroughly through the flour. The longer the shortening is mixed the more delicate the biscuit. Mix into the flour and butter just enough sweet milk to make a batter as stiff as it can be stirred. It must be almost a dough, yet not dry. The longer the soda and cream tartar are mixed through the flour the better the biscuit will be. Bake twenty minutes in a hot oven

    Notes:

    THE LATE DR. PHILIP

The death of the late J.R. Philip, M.D., M.C.R.S. Eng., which occurred last Wednesday evening, leaves a blank in the list of our oldest citizens, and a diminuation of the number of the kindly, honest men, whom everyone feels the better for meeting. The Dr. was born in Aberdeen , Scotland , in 1829, and emigrated with his father, to Canada in 1841, settling in Galt. Soon after coming to Galt he commenced the study of medicine at Toronto University , where he graduated and in 1847 was licensed by the Medical Board of that day as medical practitioner. After practicing his profession in Galt for a short time, he went to Aberdeen where he graduated as an M.D. in 1851 at Aberdeen University . Thence he went to London , and in 1852 completed an unusually varied and excellent medical education by graduating as a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons. The Crimean war soon commencing the Doctor accompanied the English army to the Crimea, and did active service on the battlefield and in the hospital till the close of hostilities, receiving as a recognition of his labors the English and Turkish medals for faithful service.

In 1859 he returned to Galt and recommenced practice here, where he has remained ever since. The Doctor's skill as a physician, and particularly as a surgeon, gave him a wide reputation and a standing in his profession such as but few have attained. Among those who knew him he was popular and respected. His manners were kindly, and without affectation, and his sterling honesty and straight-forwardness were universally admired. Few men have possessed the faculty of being outspoken and yet making their mark in the community, without making enemies, but the doctor was one of the few, and living without an enemy in this community his death is regretted by all who knew him. He leaves behind him a widow and several children to mourn his loss. The funeral on Friday was largely attended, nearly every one of the clergymen, physicians, and business men of the town following his remains to the grave.
