    Notes:

Our community did not have a Police Constable in its early days. The settlement of Bergeytown, and later the hamlet of New Hope, was basically unprotected and relied on the honesty and goodwill of its citizens to be law abiding. With the incorporation of the Village of Hespeler, on January 19, 1859 the first Council meeting passed a motion by David Rife, seconded by C. Nahrgang that Henry Fields be appointed constable and "receive such fees as the law provides and only when on actual duty". The motion was carried and Henry Fields became the first police officer in Hespeler.

There was no lockup at the time, and the nearest goal was in Guelph, so anyone unfortunate enough to be incarcerated in the evening had to spend the night locked in a bedroom at the constable's house. There is a report of one such individual who woke Mr. Fields by making too much noise while trying to escape and was dragged back through the bedroom window by his ankles! The window was subsequently nailed shut. Mr. Fields continued as constable until 1873 and passed away one year later at age 63.

    MCGINNIS, HUGH

The funeral of Mr. McGinnis, aged 68 years, whose death we briefly mentioned in last week's issue, took place on Friday morning, the 19th November 1886, from his residence on Bergey St. in Hespeler to the Catholic Church. Mass was celebrated by Rev. Father Kiely, after which his body was interred in the Catholic Cemetery in the presence of his sorrowful widow and family of eleven children and many grandchildren, as well as a large concourse of friends and acquaintances. He was a native of County Down, Ireland and settled in the 4th concession of Puslinch in the year 1831. He successfully cultivated a farm there for upwards of forty years, leaving it a few years ago, since which time he has lived in Hespeler, endearing himself to all by his unassuming and genial manner. Although showing the wear and tear of a busy, industrious life, he bid fair to see many years, but on Saturday he was suddenly taken ill with inflamation of the lungs, never rallying, death ensuing at an early hour on Wednesday morning. We believe that, of the twelve members of his family, eleven were present at his death. Among others from a distance we noticed at his funeral Mrs. McDonald of North Branch, Lapeer County, Michigan and Mrs. Clancy of Buffalo, NY, both daughters.

MCGINNIS, JANE (Nee Keough - sometimes spelled Kehoe)

At the great age of 98 years, Mrs. Hugh McGinnis, at the home of her son, John in Berlin, ON, shortly before midnight on Saturday, 10th October 1908. Until she sustained a fall about three months ago and had a hip badly injured, she was up and around with as much activity as many women twenty years her junior. She has been confined to her room for about eleven weeks and latterly dropsy had set in. Her vitality gradually lessened and the end was not unexpected. She was born in Potsdam, NY in 1810. She was twice married, first when young to a Mr. Sullivan, to whom she bore two children. After his death, she married Hugh McGinnis and with him settled on a farm near Downey's School in Puslinch. She was the mother of twelve children, of whom the following survive: Mrs. R. D. McDonald of West Branch, Michigan; Mrs. J. Clancy of Cleveland; Mrs. A. Smith of Toronto; Mrs. D. Fields of Galt; Mrs. R. Fields of Toronto; Bernard of Colorado; Joseph of Toronto; John of Berlin; and Hugh of Hespeler. Joseph and Bernard died in the same year about four summers past. Mr. McGinnis Sr. died twenty-four years ago. For many years, she lived in Hespeler but for seven years, has had her home with her son, John in Berlin. She was a most remarkable old lady. Up until quite recently, she took a keen interest in current events of both local and general interest. She read different newspapers and was exceedingly well informed. She delighted in visits from her friends of past years and in talking over bye gone days. She was widely known and respected and retained her faculties to a remarkable degree until the close of her life. She was a devout member of the Roman Catholic Church and a regular attendant. The funeral took place on Tuesday from St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church to the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Berlin.
