    Notes:

    Death of Robert Goodall, Esq.

We are very much pained to announce the death of this respected gentleman, which occurred at his residence, McNaughton Street, Galt, on Monday last. Mr. Goodall was in his 73rd year. For the past month his many friends were pained to see that his health and vigor were rapidly failing, but notwithstanding, it was only for a short time before his death that a fatal termination of his illness was anticipated. Mr. Goodall came to this country from Glasgow, in company with his brother, Mr. John Goodall, in the year 1832. Between them they purchased the farm just outside the present town, on the West River Road, now owned by Mr. George Hogg, where they at once went to work to make ready a home for the rest of their family, who, the following year, joined them. Gradually one brother after the other acquired farms, Mr. George Goodall remaining on the homestead; Mr. Wm. Goodall settling on the farm now owned by Mr. John Gillepsie, East River Road, Mr. James Goodall settling on the farm below the Grand River bridge, now owned by Mr. John Watson; Mr. John Goodall settling on the farm on Mill Creek, now owned by Mr. Turnbull, and the subject of this obituary taking the splendid farming property on the St. George Road, now occupied by his son, Mr. W. W. Goodall. On these properties the brothers prospered and acquired the independence their industry merited. From acquirement and natural ability they were soon obtained an influential position in all circles in this section and brought to bear on all questions affecting the social welfare or public questions of the day a powerful influence. The first who passed away was Mr. James Goodall and he was followed in a few years by Mr. Wm. Goodall. At the time of the death of his brother Mr. Robert Goodall resided on the splendid property he had acquired to which he added as opportunity offered until his entire holding comprised 300 acres. Age, and desire for rest from his active life caused him a few years ago to place his farm under the charge of his son and he then purchased the property on McNaughton Street, where, with his wife and daughters he has once resided. Mr. Goodall was twice married, his first wife being a sister to the late Adam Henderson. By this marriage were born to him three children, Mr. Allan Goodall, of Michigan, Mrs. George Thompson, and Mrs. Hugh Arthur of North Dumfries. His second wife was a daughter of the late James Kerr, and sister of Mr. James Kerr, whose farm adjoins that of Mr. Goodall. By this marriage one son, Mr. W. W. Goodall, Mrs. Peter C. Lutz, of St. Paul, Minn., and his two daughters, who resided with him at the time of his death, were born. Of the original family, two sisters of the deceased, Mrs. Trotter, mother of Messrs. William and James Trotter, of Galt, and Mrs. Duncan, of Owen Sound, still survive. These ladies, with Mr. George Goodall, of Paris, and Mr. John Goodall, of Galt, are all now left of the original family of seven brothers and sisters who for many a day, keenly in the memory of many in this section yet, actively lived the life and took pp their share of the burdens, and dispensed kindness and help to all, in the pioneer days of this Township.

Mr. Goodall was one of the six Trustees of the old St. Andrew's Church. He loved his church and took strong grounds against the Disruption. The long and it is well known bitter discussions of those days passed by him unheeded, and while he manfully upheld his views, he made no enemies, and was the first to bury all rancor and submit to the decision

The Funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon. The attendance of friends, for few men enjoyed a more extended acquaintance than Robert Goodall, was immense. From far and near they had gathered to pay the last tribute of respect in their power to one who had been with them in fair weather and foul, and had borne with very many of them the difficult burdens of their early life.
