    Notes:

    Death Under Singular Circumstances

A well-known resident of Galt, Mr. Michael Kingfarmer, residing in Ward No. 3, came to his death on Friday morning last under very peculiar circumstances. It appears that a few days previously Mr. Kinfarmer's face commenced to swell, and he told those to whom he spoke of the matter that he had been bitten by a spider near the eye. When last seen on the street his face was terribly swollen, his eye being completely closed; but it was not anticipated that anything further than discomfort cold arise. When medical aid was called in on Wednesday, the swelling had increased until both eyes were completely closed, and the most energetic treatment failed to relieve the sufferer. On Thursday the puffing commenced to descend into the body, and by the afternoon of that day the throat became very badly affected, Mr. Kingfarmer experiencing great difficulty in breathing. All efforts to afford relief at this time were unavailing and, on Friday morning the sufferer breathed his last - his death being caused by suffocation from the swelling of his throat.

It should be stated here that the medical gentlemen who saw the patient do not believe that a spider bite had anything to do with the poisoning which caused his death. It appears that Mr. Kingfarmer had been employed in pulling wool from sheepskins, and they rather attributed his death to blood-poisoning caused either by the stuff used in the process or by the state of the skin themselves. The poison must have entered his system through a small pimple beneath his eye, which they believe he must have rubbed with his hands while employed at his work. This is their theory at any rate, and they unite in declaring it one of the most singular cases they ever met with in the course of their practice.
