    GEO. V. MOORE IS DEAD.

A Well Known Galtonian Passes Away. - Was Born in Waterloo,

Galt Reporter: - George V. Moore, died at the Galt Hospital on Tuesday evening and seldom has the passing out of a citizen been marked by more general and more profound regret. During his long illness, though reports were at many times unsatisfactory, it was hoped against that he would recover. It was hope not to be so however. He fought a long struggle with the inevitable and eventually succumbed.

Mr. Moore suffered during the past year from appendicitis and early this year was operated upon. The case proved extremely critical. On the Sunday morning following the operation he relapsed and the finger of death seemed almost upon him. But he fell into a sleep and it was afterwards thought that the worst had been passed, At times there were signs of improvement, but never was there any substantial promise of recovery. A lingering illness ended in death on Tuesday evening.

George Veitch Moore, was the only son of the late William Moore, one of the pioneer egg merchants in Western Ontario, and a nephew of John D. Moore, registrar of Berlin, George Moore, the well-known horseman of Waterloo, and the late James D. Moore of St. Marys, the founder of the J.D. Moore Co., of that town.

Mr. Moore was born in Waterloo, and came to Galt when a boy. He attended the common school here and the G.C.I. completing his education in Upper Canada College. He entered business life as a hardware merchant, He was married in June, 1898, to Josephine, second daughter of Dr. T. W. Vardon, who, with an infant daughter, his mother, Mrs. William Moore, and two sisters, Jean and Edith, is left to mourn his early demise.

The funeral will take place Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the residence of his mother, corner of Salisbury avenue and Crescent Place to Mount View Cemetery.

Death of Mr. William Moore, of Waterloo

Says the Berlin News of Sunday: - "Mr. Wm. Moore, of Waterloo, died this morning. He had been ailing for some time, but was considered better, so well in fact, that last Sunday he attended the Presbyterian Church in Berlin, of which he was a faithful and devoted member. He was congratulated on his apparent recovery, but a few days after he again took worse, and sank gradually till his death. He was a highly esteemed well to do citizen, and will be greatly missed by his many friends in Waterloo and Berlin. He was about fifty years of age, and leaves a wife and three children to mourn his loss." -

The deceased was a brother of Mr. John D. Moore, of Dumfries; Mr. George Moore, of Waterloo; and of Mr. J D. Moore, of St. Mary's. He was a gentleman universally respected for his many estimable qualities, and his death will be deeply regretted by his many friends. Notes:

MRS. GEORGE MOORE, the mother of John D. Moore, ex-M.P.P., and now Registrar of the County of Waterloo, was a woman worth knowing, because of her sterling character and her true nobility of nature. And a visit with her was always a source of pleasure and profit. She was simple and unconventional in her habits, and void of all affectation and pretense. She worshipped reality and truth and loved real goodness. Her early training had been in the severe and stern school of the Calvinistic creed of her fathers and that had shaped her thoughts, and cut out channels for her feeling and moulded her nature. And all through her life it brought to her profound satisfaction. The Shorter Catechism was with her a textbook of which she never wearied and, like all who learn it early and have it engraven on the memory, it was ever at command to open up and explain some deep question in theology, or to solve some knotty problem in religious experience. Great was her satisfaction in the use of it. When she gave the "answer" to the questions, the "proofs" were not wanting.

For many years bodily hindered her from attendance on public worship, but her interest in the church and its minister and its members never failed. Being shut in, she gave herself to meditating upon the Word of God day and night, and had thought out to her own satisfaction many large questions of vast moment. And so her straightforward talk, her clear views of the teachings of God's Word, her deep and far-reaching thoughts of life and the life to come, her strong commonsense conceptions of things uttered in terse and telling sentences were very refreshing. It was like a cool invigorating breeze from the salt sea! One institution she greatly enjoyed was the prayer-meeting which had been kept up for over a quarter of a century in Cedar Creek by the members of five or six congregations in that district. It was held in the homes of the people, and when it came to her house it was always a delightful occasion for her. It brought with it spiritual fellowship and spiritual food. The prayers and the preaching were both helpful and inspiring. They ministered materially to her heart-life, increasing her faith, and calling forth her love, and brightening her hope. Often after an address or an exposition I have heard her say: "That suits me." "Aye, that is what is needed."

She was of a thankful spirit, suffering none of God's mercies to go unmarked. Her thought of this was much in keeping with that of Mr. John Livingstone, of Ancrum, 1650 : "Alas! for that capital crime of the Lord s people barrenness in praises. Oh, how fully I am persuaded that a line of praises is worth a leaf of prayer, and an hour of praises is worth a day of fasting and mourning!"

Before she was called home she was fully prepared by looking into the Hereafter, and listening to its voices, and longing for its rest, and the riches of its fellowship, and the rejoicing of its love. She was quietly and believingly awaiting the Lord's time. And when He came to receive her unto Himself, it was the answer of many a prayer and the fulfilment of many a promise on which she had firmly builded.

    DEATH OF A DUMFRIES PIONEER.

Mrs. George Moore Succumbs After A Lengthy Illness - Died at the Residence of Her Son Tuesday - A Long and Useful Life

Of late the grim reaper has been plying his ghastly calling with unremitting zeal in this district, particularly among the aged and Infirm. One of his latest victims is that venerable lady, Agnes Douglas, relict of the late Geo. Moore, of North Dumfries, her death occurring on Tuesday afternoon, at 3 o'clock. The deceased was one of those heroic women to whom, equally with their husbands, is due the credit of converting the wilderness which Canada was in the early days, to the progressive an prosperous country it now is. The story of her life is an interesting one. She was born in Bearhope, Roxboroughshire, Scotland, 82 years ago. In 1834, after the death of her father, she, with her mother and seven brothers and sisters, the other six children remaining in the land of their birth, came to Canada. While in quarantine at Grosse Isle, near Quebec, the cholera scourge swept the continent, and the mother died, apparently of that dread disease. On the journey to their destination, North Dumfries. yet another member of the family was called away, a daughter joining her mother in the great beyond. The late Mrs. Moore took up her residence in this township and soon after her arrival here was married to the late George Moore, who predeceased her by some years. At the time of her death the deceased was the last survivor of the family, the members of which made their homes in various parts of the world. After her husband's demise, she continued to reside on the homestead, living with her son, John D. Moore, M.P.P. Of the four sons, three survive her. They are: James D., St. Marys; John D., N. Dumfries and George, Waterloo. Some two years ago the deceased lady was obliged to take to her bed, but her general health appeared to be fully as good as when she was able to be about. She preserved her faculties in a wonderful manner and when death claimed her for his own, her intellect was as keen and her mind as active, as when in the prime of life. Until yesterday morning, she was seemingly as well as she had been for years, but a few hours after she had crossed the bourne. She was a member of the C.P. church and before the infirmities of age came upon her, took an active interest in all matters pertaining to the church. Of herself personally, much could be said, but as her goodness of heart,. kindliness of disposition and other, enduring attributes are known to all who know her, suffice it to say, she will greatly missed , as all who, like her, have done much for their fellow beings are. The funeral will take place from the residence of her son, Mr. John D. Moore, this afternoon at 3 o'clock, to the Cedar Creek Cemetery.

    Notes:

" Many of the principal settlers of Dumfries came in about 1830. We earn from Mr. William Cowan, River Road, that the following well-known Dumfries families all sailed in the "Argus" of Workington, England, on the 3rd June, 1829: those of Francis Hogg, Walter Cowan, James Cowan, George Barrie and Hector Rennelson. The voyage was only nine weeks and two days!
The families of the following persons also came out together by the "Sarah Mary Ann," of Maryport, England, in April, 1831: George Land-reth, James Bunyan, Thomas Adams, John Kerr, David Brown, Adam Kersell, Robert Cranston, James and Walter Deans, John, Thomas and William Henderson, John and William Veitch, Robert Laidlaw (father of James Laidlaw M.P.P.), Paisley Block ; James Little and Robert Aitkin, Blue Lake, and James Davidson, Keg Lane, near Paris. With possibly one exception, all these families were from Roxburghshire, Scotland. Voyage - five weeks and four days.

Reminiscences of the Early History of Galt and the Settlement of Dumfries in the Province of Ontario, by James Young

    _____________________

THE first settlers of Dumfries were generally of a superior class. With few exceptions, they had received a good education at the Parochial Schools of their native land, and many of them brought with them to Canada a thirst for knowledge which even the necessities of bush life could not eradicate. This led to very early endeavours to combine instruction with amusement during their leisure hours.

It will surprise many to learn, however, that as early as 1834, when clearings were but few and far between, and when the wolf and bear were not unfrequent visitors, that a Debating society was in full blast during the winter evenings. Such was the fact„ however, and long and excit-ing were the discussions which took place.

The scene of these intellectual combats was the home Mr. John Reid, after whom the clachan of Reidsville has been called, and who only passed away to his rest a few months ago. The members of the society were Messrs.John Black, John Reid, Thomas and James Dalgliesh, William Veitch, Alex. Turnbull, Thomas Ritchie, William Hastie, Andrew Mathieson, James Cunningham, Andrew Elliott, John Currie, John Johnston, George Cunningham, Alex. Beckett, James Oliver, Thomas Cleghorn, and occasionally a few others. A majority of these gentlemen still survive, and the mere recital of their names will awaken in the minds of those acquainted with them, many pleasing, and possibly some sad, reminiscences of the past.

It is needless to say that this Society was an exceedingly vigorous one, and that the questions discussed were characteristic of the time. Among them were the following:
    (1) Which is most benefit to mankind, Agriculture or Commerce ?
    (2) Whether is the profane man or the hypocrite most injury to society?
    (3) Which is the most destructive element, fire or water?
    (4) Whether does wood or iron most benefit mankind ? and
    (5) Would a ship made of iron sink or swim?

The debates upon these and similar subjects, which, in the absence of candles, sometimes took place by the light of burning pine knots, were characterised by deep interest and not a little talent, and, to use the language of one of the participants: "Nothing could exceed the enjoyment of these gatherings."

The annual dinner of the Debaters was an occasion never to be forgotten. It was also held at Mr. Reid's house, but the viands were provided by the members of the Society generally. It could not boast of the cuisine of Delmonico, nor of bills of fare in French and perfume. It was considered, however, a veritable feast at that time. The Society unitedly purchased a sheep. That was the first step. From this was made soup, a haggis-the oat-meal for which had to be brought from a drug store in Dundas and roast and boiled joints. Add to this description, a few " cakes of the period," and you have the dinner, gastronomically considered, in all its glory

It was, however, "the feast of reason and flow of soul" which followed, that gave the occasion its princi-pal attraction. The speeches-the songs-the hilarity-can be better imagined than described. As an illustration of the mirthful spirit which prevailed, it may be mentioned that, on one occasion, whilst ladling out huge platefuls of the steaming haggis, John Black, the chairman, vigorously recited Burns' address to that famous dish:

"Fair, fa your honest, sonsie face,
    Great chieftain o' the puddin' race;
Aboon them a' ye tak your place,
    Painch, tripe or thairm,
Weel are ye wordy of a grace
    As lang's my arm."

Nothing could better illustrate the character of the early settlers of Dumfries than efforts at intellectual improvement under such formidable difficulties. It is not too much to say of them, that no part of Canada has been settled by a class of men of greater physical and mental energy. "None but Lowland Scotchmen would ever have cleared North Dumfries," is a remark which has frequently been made. This may be an exaggeration. But those who remember how heavily timbered, how stony and how swampy its rugged hills and valleys were forty years ago, will readily admit, that only the highest courage, and most indomitable energy and perseverance, could have made the township what it is today in the same space of time. Had their work to be done over again, could a magician's wand once more make Dumfries the tangled forest it was when this history began, we venture to say their descendants would never undertake to perform it!
