Bergey. - Eva, daughter of David and Louisa Bergey, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Sept. 12, 1875. Failing somewhat in health for a few years, she finally succumbed to an attack of septicaemia and heart failure, on June 12, 1914. Sister Eva was patient in her suffering and resigned to the will of God. She was always active and earnest in her work and desirous of doing all the good she could for others. [Note: begin p. 208] her place in the home, in the community, and Church will be greatly missed. She was converted to God in 1892, and has since that time been an interested and active worker in the Church. The large concourse of relatives and friends who met at the funeral services on the 15th bears witness to the esteem in which she was held and to the sympathy extended to the family in their bereavement. They sorow [sic], but not without hope.. Services were conducted by Noah Stouffer and S. F. Coffman. Text, Jno. 10: 28. Interment at the Blenheim burying grounds.

Bergey David Bergey was born in Preston, Ont., on July 3, 1845. He passed to his eternal reward on March 25, 1932; aged 86 y. 8 m. 22 d. At the age of 4 he with his parents moved to Manheim, Ont., where he grew to manhood. In his youth he prepared himself for the teaching profession, which he followed for twenty-five years. The greater part of his life he also engaged in farming. He also served the community as conveyancer and administrator of many estates. As a young man he united with the Mennonite Church, and in 1885 be with his family moved to a farm near New Dundee, Ont. Immediately he became interested in the activities of the Church, one of these being the founding of S. S. in the Blenheim congregation. On Dec. 29, 1889, he was ordained to the office of deacon, in which capacity he faithfully served until a few years before his death. His place in the church services was seldom vacant. For many years he served as secretary of the Mennonite Conference of Ontario, including the work of several committees. He also was president of the local branch of the Upper Canada Bible Society for a number of years in recognition of which the Society presented him with a life membership certificate upon his retirement a few years ago. On Dec. 31, 1872, he was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to Louisa, oldest daughter of Pre. Moses S. Bowman, in which union they lived for 59 years. They were blessed with 4 sons and 3 daughters. The mother, 1 son (Ezra), predeceased him. Three survive: Gilbert, Milton, Herbert, Mrs. Menno Nahrgang, and Mrs. Fred Miller; also 12 grandchildren, 2 brothers, and 1 sister. He enjoyed good health until within a few hours of his death, which was the result of an acute heart attack. He will be missed in the home, in the Church, and in the community. He left a bright testimony. His daily prayer was, "If thou Lord shouldst take any of us from this world before this day is over, may we be prepared to meet thee in peace." Funeral services were held March 28, from the home of his son, Gilbert, and at the Blenheim Mennonite Church where a large concourse of people had assembled to show their respect. Services were conducted at the house by M. H. Shantz, and at the church by Bros. M. Hallman and S. F. Coffman. Text, II Tim. 4: 7, 8. Interment in adjoining cemetery.

Bergey, David (1845-1932) (3 July 1845-1932).

"A prominent leader of the Ontario Mennonites (Mennonite Church), David Bergey was born on 3 July 1845 in Preston, Waterloo Co., ON, the fifth child of Jacob Bergey and Elizabeth Eby, who were of Swiss-German descent. He married Louisa Bowman, daughter of Moses Bowman. Of their seven children, their son Gilbert became secretary of the Ontario Mennonite Conference, following his father's service in the same capacity for a quarter of a century. Bergey received his education in the public school in Mannheim, the high school in Kitchener, and the normal school in Toronto. In early life he was received as a member of the Mennonite congregation near Mannheim known as Latschar, where he attended until in 1885. He moved to farms west of New Dundee and became deacon of the Blenheim congregation in December 1889. His place of residence was usually on a farm either in Waterloo Township or Wilmot Township. He lived in the town of Waterloo for several years. He was a gifted man and contributed to the community in various ways. Besides being a schoolteacher, he was a charter member of the Rural Telephone Company; he served on the board of the Mennonite Aid Union; he was the district member for the conference on the Mennonite Evangelizing and Benevolent Board; he was instrumental in organizing Sunday schools at Latschar, at Blenheim, and probably in the rural areas south; he served on the local public school board, in the young people's meeting organization of the church, and as superintendent of the Sunday school. He was also a life member of the British and Foreign Bible Society"

Bergey, Louisa, eldest daughter of Pre. Moses S. and Anna Cressman Bowman and beloved wife of deacon David Bergey, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Nov.28, 1845; died at her home near New Dundee,Ont., Jan.11, 1931; aged 85 y. 1. m 14d. On Dec.31, 1872, she was married to David Bergey. This union was blessed with 4 sons and 3 daughters. Two preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, 2 daughters (Amelia and Ida ), 3 sons ( Gilbert, Milton, and Herbert), 10 grandchildren,4 sisters,4 brothers. At the age of 25 she confessed Christ and united with the Mennonite Church of which she was a faithful member to death. She was a regular attendant at church services, seldom missing a service. She was a real help to her husband in his work as deacon in the Church. She enjoyed good health all her life and bore her brief illness with patience; looking forward in happy anticipation for the triumphal entry into the Glory World. Her last desire was to be "where there is fullness of joy and pleasure forever-more." Funeral services were held Jan.14, at the home and at Blenheim Mennonite Church near New Dundee,Ont., by Bros. Jacob Bergey, "the second son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Wagner) Bergey, was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, September 1st, 1818, and came to Canada with his parents in 1822. They settled near Preston, on the farm known as "Henry Brower's." Here young Jacob was raised. On April 11th, 1844, he was married to Elizabeth, daughter of Moses and Barbara (Pannabecker) Eby. She was born January 27th, 1824. On May 2nd, 1849, they moved on Lot No. 4, Bleams Road, Wilmot Township, near Mannheim, where they have resided ever since. They are quite smart for their age. Their family consisted of ten children, of whom two died in infancy."

BERGEY.-Near Mannheim, Waterloo Co., Ont., on Feb. 29, 1904, of the infirmities of old age, Jacob Bergey, aged 85 Y., 6 M., less 1 D. He was born in Montgomery Co., Pa., Sept. 1, 1818, went to Canada with his parents in 1822, and in 1849 moved to the farm where he died. He is survived by his widow, four sons, four daughters, 42 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral on March 3, on which occasion Pre. A. Cressman spoke from Rev. 14: 13 in German and Pre. N. Stauffer from Job 5: 26 in English. Buried in Latchar cemetery. We mourn not as those who have no hope.

Bergey.--Near Manheim, Ont., Elizabeth Eby Bergey, widow of the late Jacob Bergey, passed away on May 19, 1911. She was born Jan.17, 1824; aged 87 y. 4 m. 2 d. She bore her six weeks' illness previous to her death with great patience and resignation and often expressed a longing for her Savior to come and take her to Himself. She leaves to mourn her death 8 children, 45 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Funeral was held on May 21 at Latschar Church on which occasion Bro. N. Stauffer spoke to a crowded house from Rev. 21: 4, 5, and Bro. Manasseh Hallman from II Tim. 4: 6-8.

Moses Bowman, "the eldest son of Benjamin Baumann, was born November 9th, 1819. He was married to Anna, daughter of Joseph and Barbara (Biehn) Cressman, October 8th 1844. She was born near Freeport, Ontario, on August 7th, 1828. On March 25th, 1845, they moved on their farm (The farm is composed of lot No. 4, north of Bleam's Road, Wilmot) near Manheim where they still reside. On May 1st, 1853, he was ordained deacon of the church of his choice, and on January 2nd, 1859, he was ordained minister of the Mennonite denomination. He was, in his days, one of the best pulpit orators that the church possessed, and even yet in his old days his sermons convince both friends and enemies that he is a man of more than ordinary ability. His family consisted of twelve children,"

Pre. Moses S. Bowman.

Near Mannheim, Waterloo Co., Ontario, on January 4th, 1898, Pre. Moses S. Bowman, aged 78 years, 1 month and 26 days. He was married to Anna Cressman in 1844, and the union was blest with six sons and six daughters of whom all but one son survive him. He has left also, 53 surviving grandchildren. On May 1st, 1853, he was chosen as deacon, and on January 2d, 1859, he was ordained a minister of the Mennonite church. For upwards of thirty-five years he worked earnestly and faithfully for the Master who had blessed him with a clear intellect, a keen insight into human nature, fluent language, and great spiritual power, so that his sermons were always attentively listened to. His preaching was of the conversational order, and his words thus seemed to be directed to every individual rather than to the congregation as a body, and as he spoke directly to the heart, reason and conscience of his hearer, his words never failed to make a deep impression. He was greatly interested in the cause of temperance, and his efforts in this direction, especially in Sunday school work, have been productive of much good. In the capacity of husband, father, neighbor and friend, his conduct was such as to gain for him the respect and esteem of all who knew him. During the last four years of his life he did not take an active part in the ministry, owing to impaired mental and bodily power, but he looked forward serenely for the coming of his Lord, and when his physician, during his last visit, told him that he had not many hours to live, he expressed his pleasure that he was so soon to be summoned to be in the presence of the King, where we believe he now is, and is to remain forever more.
On Jan. 7, he was followed to his last resting place in the Latschar cemetery by a large concourse of people, on which occasion Bishop Amos Cressman spoke in German from John 11: 25, 26, and Noah Stauffer in English from Luke 2: 29-32, and Heb. 11: 14, 16.

BOWMAN.-On the 22d of December, near Mannheim, Waterloo Co., Ont., Anna Cressman, widow of the late Pre. Moses Bowman. She was born near Freeport, Ont., Aug. 7, 1828, and reached the age of 74 Y., 4 M., 15 D. Buried on the 25th at Mannheim, followed to her last earthly resting place by a host of relatives and friends. She was beloved and respected and we mourn not as those who have no hope.

One of the icons of Doon Heritage Crossroads' collection, as an example, is the Moses Eby desk, made in 1817 by the apprentice cabinetmaker Moses Eby, who had emigrated to Waterloo County from Pennsylvania. Its elaborate marquetry, inlay and other construction details attest to the skill and fine workmanship of Eby and many of those early builders who crafted beautiful furniture without benefit of mechanical power.

Benjamin Baumann, "eldest son of Wendel and Maria (Huber) Baumann, was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania, February 15th, 1787. He was married to Susannah, daughter of Joseph and Magdalena (Allenbach) Bechtel. She was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, June 16th, 1797 and died September 19th, 1870. In spring of 1815 he came to Canada, prospecting the country. He found Waterloo to be a favorable county for the forming of settlements. In fall of the same year, he in company with Jonathan B. Baumann and John Brubacher (Deacon Johney), returned to Pennsylvania. In 1818 he, in company with Christian Burkholder and family, John Good and family, old Betty Baumann (wife of Peter Baumann), old Esther Cressman, Samuel Bechtel and others, came from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to Waterloo County, Ontario Canada, making the journey in 28 days. On arriving here he settled on lot No. 54, German Company's Tract, township of Waterloo, about two miles south-east of Berlin, where he resided until his death. The farm is now owned by his son, Rev. Samuel Baumann. They had a family of nine children."

On September 24th, 1822, he was married to Barbara Biehn who was born in Waterloo County, near Doon, January 7th, 1806, and died August 13th, 1888. They resided near Freeport, Ontario, where he died January 25th, 1840. Their family consisted of eight children"
