Wendell Hallman, "the youngest son of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Detweiler) Hallman, was born in North Dumfries Township, Waterloo County, Ontario, November 4th, 1827. His boyhood days were spent on his father's farm near Roseville. On February 13th, 1849, he was married to Nancy Schlichter who was born August 24th, 1829. Soon after their marriage they settled on a farm (The farm is now owned by Mr. Samuel Tohman) about a mile west of New Dundee, where they resided until March 20th, 1883, when they sold their farm and moved to Yale, Michigan, where he again purchased a farm and followed farming for several years but now lives retired. Nearly thirty years ago he was ordained to the ministry for the River Brethren (Dunkards) denomination, for which body he is still a diligent worker. As a minister he is well liked by his congregation and others, and his sermons are distinguished for the great amount of well-digested thought so vividly expressed in the plainest language, that no one hearing him preach can say, "I did not understand him," for all who wish to be taught out of the Word of God, will say, "Mr. Hallman's sermons are always Gospel-like and soul-cheering." In his habits he is very domestic."

DEATH OF REV. W. HALLMAN - Waterloo County Pioneer Passes Away on Sunday Morning in Yale, Mich.

WAS IN HIS 83RD YEAR - The sad intelligence was received in Berlin on Sunday by Rev. H. S. Hallman, of the death of his venerable father, Rev. Wendel Hallman, which took place in the morning at the home of the deceased's daughter, Mrs. Levi Donnenworth, Yale, Mich., where he has resided during the last three years. The deceased had been suffering from dropsy for several years but the direct cause was heart failure. The remains will be brought to Berlin on Wednesday morning and taken to the residence of Rev. H.S. Hallman, Bingeman Street, and the funeral will be held in the afternoon at 2 o'clock to the Bethany Mennonite Church, and interment will take place at the East End Mennonite cemetery ( First Mennonite Cemetery) The late Rev. Wendell Hallman, the youngest s/o Benjamin and Elizabeth (Detweiler) Hallman, was born in North Dumfries Township on November 11th, 1827, and was in his 83rd year. His boyhood days were spent on his father's farm near Roseville. On Feb. 13th, 1849, he was married to Nancy Schlichter. Soon after their marriage they settled on a farm about a mile west of New Dundee, where they resided until March 20th, 1883, when they sold their farm and moved to Yale, Michigan, where he again purchased a farm and followed farming for several years when he retired. Nearly 45 years ago he was ordained to the ministry of the River Brethren (Dunkards) denomination, for which today he was a diligent worker. He was a thoughtful and practical preacher and endeavored to live the Gospel as he preached it. There was a family of 14 children of whom ten survive, namely, John, Yale; Benj. S., British Columbia; Rev. Henry S., Berlin; Wendell S., Chicago; Simeon, Toronto; Mrs. Philip Zeller, Mrs. Levi Dunnenworth, Mrs. Emanuel Gingerich, Mrs. Jos. Smith and Mrs. Isaiah Martin, all of Yale, Michigan. One brother, Rev. Benj. Hallman, of Roseville, who is six years older than the deceased and one sister, Mrs. Enoch Ziegler, Irvin street, Berlin, also survive.

He was enaged in pulling down the stone foundation of the old dwelling on his farm, when, all of a sudden, part of the wall fell, striking him on the lower part of the body and causing death within a few hours after the accident. Aug 8 th, in Waterloo Co., Ont., Bro. Noah Schantz, aged 57 years and 6 months. He was removing a wall, when a portion of it fell upon him, and broke both legs, three ribs, and crushed in body considerably; although suffering excrutiating pain, he survived 5 hours. He leaves a wife and 9 children to mourn their loss.

SHANTZ.--On the 28th of January, 1892, near Berlin, Waterloo Co., Ont., of paralytic stroke, Hannah Shantz, widow of Noah C. Shantz, aged 72 years and 11 months. Her remains were laid to rest on the 31st in the Mennonite Cemetery, Berlin. Funeral services were preached by Moses Bowman, Sr., in German, and Bro. David Hostetler, Wayne Co., Ohio, in English. Sister Shantz was a consistent member for over 50 years. She had a desire which the writer feels to add, that is, that her dear children who have not made their peace with God might turn to Jesus who is waiting to give them this new life, and oh, that they may with the rest of the family live christian lives, so that we may all meet as a dear family in the City of God."For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 Cor. 5: 1. Benjamin Hallman, "was born September 18th, 1783, in Perkiomen Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, where he followed farming as his calling. During the great financial depressions from 1816 until 1827 many of that calling in Montgomery and other counties failed financially, and in order to save their creditors from losing any money, the distressed farmers sold their farms at a great sacrifice and paid their debts, and with whatever little balance left they wended their way to Canada where land could be had cheap and thus made another attempt to gain a free home. And as a rule all these parties in a very few years were the possessors of valuable farms. Such was the case with Benjamin Hallman, our Canadian progenitor. He suffered financially during the great crisis as aforesaid, and, finding things to his advantage, he moved to Canada in 1825 (See page 56 for more information) and settled in Waterloo County, two miles west of the town of Waterloo. Here he resided until spring (1826) when he moved to North Dumfries Township, about one mile east of Roseville, where he had purchased a most beautiful farm, then nearly all forest. This farm is now in possession of Menno H. Hallman. Here the old progenitor died full of years, September 10th, 1869. On September 2nd, 1802, he was married to Elizabeth, daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Harley) Detweiler. She was born August 8th, 1784, and died August 9th, 1856. To them was born a numerous family, all of which were born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, save the two youngest, Hannah and Wendel, who were born in Waterloo County, Ontario"

Henry was married to Catharine, daughter of Joseph and Hannah (Fried) Wismer, May 4th, 1813. She was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, April 11th, 1794, came to Canada with her parents who settled in Waterloo County, near Blair, in 1800, and died at Preston, November 22nd, 1881. He died February 12th, 1858. They had a family of ten children"

A-1-163 Henry B. K. Bauman Probate of the Will of Henry B.K. Bauman , late of the Village of Preston, Tanner and Currier, deceased, on the petition of Jacob Hagey of the Township of Waterloo, Yeoman, and Catharine Bauman (widow of said deceased) the Executor and Executrix named in said Will, which is in the words following:

I, Henry B, K. Bauman, of the Village of Preston…Tanner and Currier, being weak in body…First, I give and devise to my beloved wife Catharine Bauman, to have and to hold, one acre of vacant land, in the old homestead, wherever she wishes to have it, and my Executors shall build her a frame house thereon, 18 by 27 ft., and one story and a half high, and the outside walls of the lower story, later filled out with stone or brick, and further to have all such furniture as she wishes to keep, and also one cow, and five hundred dollars in money, of the first that will come out of the estate, and further to have one third of all the moveable property, and the interest of one third of the old homestead, to have and to hold the above property as long as she remains my widow, and after her decease it shall be equally divided amongst my heirs, and further I request my wife to continue house keeping until my youngest child is of age, and as long afterwards as she wishes to continue on, and further my wife Catharine Bauman shall have the right to sell the above mentioned house and one acre of land, whenever she wishes to do so, and further, whenever my widow wishes to quit housekeeping, my Executors shall sell the old homestead to the best advantage, either all together or in pieces, or in Village lots, any way they can sell it to the best advantage, and further, I give and devise to my fourth son Abraham Bauman, lot number five in the Twelfth concession of the Township of Hay in the County of Huron, to have and to hold to him, his heirs and assigns forever for the consideration of five hundred dollars. And further I give and devise to my three oldest sons Joseph K. Bauman, Solomon Bauman, and Peter Bauman, each an equal share of my property and likewise my daughters Hannah, Elisabeth, Mary and Nancy, each an equal share with my sons. And my Executors shall examine my books and see how much each of my heirs receive during my lifetime, and them that got least, shall share first until they have equal shares with the others, and then they shall all share alike and if any of them have any more then their shares will amount to when my property is equal divided, they then shall pay back to the Executors or other heirs, whatever they have more than their share will amount to so that they will all share and share alike, both sons and daughters, without reserve. An Old Resident - There died at Preston on the 22nd November, Mrs. Catherine Bowman, relic of the late Henry B. K. Bowman, aged 87 years, 7 months and 11 days. The deceased lady emigrated to Canada in 1800.
