    Newlands & Co.

Of the many and varied industries of Galt, none have been more conductive to its well-being than the large and well conducted manufacturing house of Newlands & Co. It is situated on Hawthorne Street, and is a massive two storey white brick building, covering a large area of ground, in which a large number of experienced hands are employed in the manufacture of Saskatchewan Robes, Buffalo and Astrachan Coats, Eider Downs, Jersey Cloths, Glove and Shoe Linings. Mr. Newlands is also identified as a member of the American Buffalo Robe Co. , Buffalo, N. Y. The number employed here and elsewhere by Newlands & Co. is very large. The output of this firm is immense, reaching out to every part of the Dominion, utilizing in many cases the whole output of other large factories. Mr. Newlands is a "border callant," and one of our most respected citizens, and we say with Burns:

"Long may thy hardy sons of rustic toil
Be blest wi' health, and peace, and sweet content. "

    Jubilee Souvenir of Galt 1897

Newlands & Co., Manufacturers of Plushes, etc., Hawthorn Street - Among the special industries of Galt requiring particular mention is that conducted by Messrs. A.M. Newland & Co. This firm manufacture plushes for glove and shoe linings, and the arctic winters of Canada make a large demand for such material. This business was started here in 1886, Mr. Newlands having removed the business from Preston to this place, and since its inception here it has met with remarkable success. The premises occupied, which were newly built this year, are 40x70 feet in dimensions, and substantially built of brick, and are two stories in height. The works are supplied with all the latest and most improved machinery, which was specially imported from the United States for this purpose. The trade extends throughout the Dominion, the firm supplying the leading glove and rubber shoe makers of the country, as they save duty and get as good an article from Messrs. Newlands & Co. as they could from the States. Employment is furnished to 25 skilled hands, under the immediate direction and personal superintendence of Mr. Newlands. This gentleman is a native of Scotland, and an active, persevering and energetic gentleman, and well deserves the success which is attending his efforts.
