    Notes:

Death Of Thomas H. Hall - There passed away on Thursday evening, after a lingering illness, a well-known and highly esteemed member of ? H. Hall, Jedburg, in his 66th year. Deceased was born on the farm on which he died and had always lived in this vicinity. In his younger days he took a prominent part in social affairs and no function was complete without the presence of "Tom," as he was familiarly called, to add gaiety to the proceedings. He was also a musician of ability and could always be depended upon to contribute unselfishly to the program at the many house-gatherings which were a feature of the social life in the earlier days. In religion he was a Presbyterian, being a member of Knox United Church and in politics a Reformer. Besides his sorrowing widow, he is survived by one son, William, and two daughters, Martha and Daisie; also Mrs. Morton Guthrie, S. Dumfries, and A. A. Marshall, Toronto, (step-children). Two brothers and 4 sisters also survive, viz.: Robert D., Toronto; John, Vancouver; Mrs. John George Watson and Miss Janet Hall, Ayr; Mrs. Kenneth McKenzie, Blenheim; and Mrs. James A. Barclay of Escondido, California. The funeral, on Sunday afternoon, was one of the largest ever seen here, people coming from far and near to pay their last respects to the memory of one who had always been a good friend and neighbor. During the service a very touching duet was rendered by Mrs. McGaw of Galt and Mr. R. L. Anderson. The services were in charge of Rev. I. W. Currie while the pallbearers were as follows: John Burrows, Dundas; James K Hall, Toronto; A. G. Watson, Wm. Manson, Stephen Marshall and Robt. Morton.

    Death of John Gillies, Sr.

The hand of Death has again been busy in our midst, the call this time coming to John Gillies, senior, another pioneer of the district and a representative farmer who was well and favorably known over a wide section of the country. Of a strong, vigorous constitution and well preserved for a man in his 77th year the deceased had known but little sickness until a few weeks previous to the dissolution; and bore his suffering with Christian fortitude, being conscious almost to the last. He was born in K?o, Scotland, coming to Canada about the year 1856, just a little over half century ago. On his way to Hamilton he had a ticket for the ill-fated tram that ?ged into the Desjardines Canal, but fortunately missed it, following on the next train. He first settled in Galt and two years later moved to Berlin. After spending about three years in the town, he took up farming near Galt and afterwards in Blenheim, retiring to Ayr some …?... progressive farmer, a good neighbor and a prominent churchman, being a trustee in Stanley st. congregation for many years. In politics he was a staunch Reformer. In 1863 He married Jane Bell of Galt, who together with a family of five sons and one daughter, survives. The family comprises Mrs. Thos. H. Hall, and A.C. Gillies, Ayr; Thomas, John and William in South Dumfries, and Samuel in Pittsburg, Pa. The funeral on Monday afternoon to Ayr cemetery was quite largely attended, the pall bearers being Messrs. Wm. Mitchell and Geo Scott (Galt), Jesse Clemens (New Dundee), Wm. Richmond, Eph Dance, and C.K. Morton. The serves were conducted jointly by Rev. Messrs. Thomson and ?

The spring of 1834 found Galt an active village of about two hundred and fifty inhabitants, with a gradually developing country around it, and improving prospects. Besides Messrs. Dickson and Shade, the following are remembered among the citizens of that day: ....John Hall (afterwards of Ayr)...pg 92

John Hall and David Shiel were employed by Mr. Shade in the Distillery for a considerable time, but the latter, at least, had removed to his farm in West Dumfries, before the cholera broke out. pg 96...

Reminiscences of the Early History of Galt and the Settlement of Dumfries in the Province of Ontario, by James Young

    ________________________

Interestingly, considering its present size, the village of Ayr began as three distinct communities, including Nithvale in the West (Piper Street), Jedburgh in the East (Main Street), and Mudge's Mill in the centre (Stanley/Northumberland Streets). The first settlement occured in 1824 when Abel Mudge built a sawmill at the corner of Cedar Creek and the Nith River (now the site of the Watson factory). Soon after, John Hall built a small flour mill and distillery to the East of Mudge's Mill and named the settlement Jedburgh. At the same time, a smaller settlement (Nithvale) was founded to the West of Mudge's Mill where a small sawmill opened along the Nith. ....John Hall, the patriarch of his family, came to this area in the early 1830's and purchased a seventy-five acre parcel of land that included the area now flooded by the Jedburgh pond. Hall was most likely attracted to this area by the prospect of water power provided by Cedar Creek. By 1850, Hall had developed several industries including a distillery, a grist mill, and a sawmill, all using water power provided by the damming of the creek. As you can see from the bridge which straddles the original dam, the formation of a millpond is a dramatic undertaking. Although now rigidly controlled by the Grand River Conservation Authority, changing water levels used to play havoc with the operation of the mill. A sudden flood caused by the excess runoff could, in seconds, wash away implements in the mill race that took years to build while a drought could bring work to a grinding halt. This unpredictability of water power was an important incitement for industries to convert to electrical power as soon as it became available and affordable. This said, Watson's Manufacturing utilized water power along with other power sources up to 1960. A later stop on the tour recognizes the opposite end of the creek, known as Watson's pond. Together, they constitute what is known as "Millponds.
