    ___________________________

    Death of Mr. Thomas Marshall
    - The death of this well known and most respected gentleman became known in Galt early Saturday afternoon last, occasioning a general feeling of regret in the wide circle of his friends and acquaintances.

It is known that Mr. Marshall has been ailing for some months. When last he took his seat as Clerk of North Dumfries Council, it was seen that he did not look robust, still there was nothing in his appearance or manner to indicate that was the last time he would fill his accustomed position there. Shortly after his illness was announced and from then as the days went by, reports became more serious, until it was hopeless to look for any other than the result we announce with so much regret. About three years ago, by a simple accident in his wagon, Mr. Marshall received a severe fall on the back of his head which caused a slight concussion of the brain, and from that time, while not apparent to many, his intimate friends saw a change and that he never was the same man again. At the time of his death he was in his 71st year Mr. Marshall entered into public life when comparatively a young man. He was assessor of the Township first, we think, then collector, subsequently Councilor, Reeve and warden, and finally, after the death of the late Thomas Ballingal, he was appointed Clerk and Treasurer, which offices he held at the time of his death. From the establishment of the North Dumfries and South Waterloo Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company, until about three years ago, he was its Secretary and Treasurer, and it is only needless reiteration to those who knew him, when we say that to every office he brought the same serenity of action, the same uprightness and honor, and that every duty he undertook was discharged faithfully and honestly. He possessed a retentive memory which held tenaciously the details of municipal and other business life, which he was called on to discharge, and few were a better authority upon assessment, school or municipal law then he. Possessed of a serenity of mind, which was proof against annoyances, his duties were to him a pleasure, and in all his intercourse with the public he left behind him only friends. And he was tried severely. Death visited his family so often and took away, one after the other, his daughters, when little more than women, and his wife, yet he went on in the even tenor of his way, submitting quietly and discharging his duties as a humble Christian without repining or giving was to sorrows which would have broken the heart of most men.

Mr. Marshall leaves but one son and daughter and of his brothers only Mr. Peter Marshall, of South Dumfries, and Mr. Anthony Marshall, of Blenheim, survive. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon last, and no better testimonial to the estimation in which the deceased gentleman was held could have been shown than the long line of carriages filled with old friends which attended the remains to their last resting place in Cedar Creek Cemetery.

Demise of Oldest Resident - To have lived to the age of nearly 94 years, about 80 of which were spent in Dumfries, is a record that falls to a lot of very few, Mr. Richard Deans of North Dumfries, who passed away on Friday, attained that distinction. He was born in Scotland and came to Canada when in his boyhood, settling with his parents in the section now known as Keg Lane, near Paris. He had, however, resided on the farm on which he died, lot 28, concession 10, North Dumfries, for a period of about 65 years. In 1862 he married, his bride being Miss Euphemia tenant, who predeceased him some years. The family surviving comprises Mrs. Andrew Hall, Blenheim; Matthew K., Waterloo tp.; Mrs. Cameron Marshall, N. D.; Mrs. Thos. Hall, N. D.; Mrs. Jas. Henderson, Waterloo Tp., and James and Edith at home. In religion the deceased was a Presbyterian and attended Stanley street Church, Ayr, before the union. Politically he was a staunch Liberal, and also took a deep interest in municipal affairs, being a member of the township council for a number of years. He was highly respected in the community and a good neighbor. The funeral took place on Monday, when interment was made in the Ayr cemetery, Rev. J. J. Brown conducting the service. The pallbearers were Messrs. Thos. and And. Hall, Jas. Henderson, Stephen Marshall, and Matthew K. and James Deans.
