Adam M. Oliver, Pioneer Farmer, has Passed Away

Was shipwrecked when family first attempted to cross Atlantic
Well Known Dumfries Farmer specialized in Sheep and Hogs

In the death Sunday morning about 4: 30, at his home on the Branchton road of Adam Marshall Oliver, in his 90th year, North Dumfries suffered an irreparable loss, deceased having been one of the township's best known residents and one of the best citizens it ever had. The news of Mr. Oliver's death, while it came as a shock, was regretted by all, and one of his friends expressed the sentiments of all when he said, "Adam Oliver was a man through and through." For his age, deceased was a remarkable man and until a year ago he walked into Galt regularly, a distance of four miles, preferring the tramp to driving a horse. Since April last he had been confined to the house, but up until then he did his usual chores about the farm and took a great pride in the sheep and hogs. Death was due to a general break-down brought on by old age.

The late Adam Oliver was born in the parish of Kildonan, Sutherlandshire, Scotland, on Friday, May 3, 1828. In 1839, when nothing but sailboats navigated the Atlantic, his parents with a family of 16, left for America. Their voyage proved an eventful one, they being shipwrecked, and on being picked up by another boat, they were taken back to the Old Land, where they remained for a year. The second voyage in 1840 was successful and this Scotch family of pioneers reached Canada. The parents of the deceased located in Howick township 25 miles from Montreal, where they purchased a farm and lived until 1848, when the majority of the family came to Dumfries and located, the boys all taking up farms. The late Adam Oliver bought the farm on which he died, which is now run by his son, Walter, and on which he has lived ever since. The farm was purchased from a man by the name of Munro, who was one of the first settlers in Dumfries and who obtained the property from Hon. Wm. Dickson, the founder of Galt and Dumfries Township. The farm consists of 160 acres and when the late Adam Oliver came into possession of it it was mostly forest. In 1855 he was married to Agnes McLeish, daughter of George McLeish, another of the early settlers of Dumfries township. To this union were born six sons, three of whom survive, Walter and Robert, of Branchton road, and Andrew in Brantford. In religion deceased was a Presbyterian and for a great many years a regular attendant of Knox church. In politics he was a staunch Liberal.

The late Adam Oliver was known far and wide as a model farmer and to his energy in the early days can be attributed the high standard of sheep and hogs raised in this district. He specialized in these animals and took a great pride in his stock. He gave most of his time in recent years to the care of this stock on his son's farm. He was one of the oldest members of the South Waterloo Agricultural Society, and this year's show was the first he had failed to attend in many years. When he received his honarary member badge this year he remarked, "Hang it on the clock and tell the boys I won't be there this year. While one of the most prominent men of the township, deceased had never taken any part in municipal affairs, always refusing entreaties of his friends to run for office.

The funeral will take place on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence of his son Walter, Branchton road, to Mount View cemetery, Galt

"For the trek from Hamilton to Galt vicinity they secured a wagon of some kind, and, I suppose a horse, so that the women of the family might ride. The men and boys took turns walking. It must have been harvest time for as they approached their goal they stopped to help thresh grain with flails at various farm holdings and in this way earned one bushel of grain for each ten bushels they threshed. By doing this they procured enough grain to seed the cleared section of the 160 acres which they bought from a Mr. Monroe situated about four miles from what was to become the City of Galt. This farm became the Oliver Homestead and remained in the Oliver Family until 1959."
