    Notes:

Charles P. Quirmbach of Preston leased the Railroad Hotel in Berlin in 1874. It stood opposite Shantz's foundry in West King Street and was a long white building with a verandah in King Street. It got its name from Railroad Street, now College Street. On the lower corner of King and Young Streets then stood Mr. Brueckner's cooper-shop, and next to it, an old frame blacksmith shop. In 1876 the merchants employed Mr. Quirmbach as a private night watchman, a position that he filled acceptably for nineteen years. He was the father of Emil and Herman Quirmbach, the Rev. Albert Quirmbach, and other sons and daughters.

DEATH OF CHAS. P. QUIRM BACH

He Passed Away Shortly After Midnight - A Valued Citizen Gone

Mr. Charles P. Quirmbach, a well-known and highly respected citizen, died at his residence on Ellen street at 12.10 a.m. to. day, after a long illness arising from an affection of the heart. Mr. Quirmbach was able to move shout considerably between attacks of his disease. He knew that he was fighting a losing battle for health yet bore himself with fortitude and cheerfulness. About five o'clock Tuesday evening he grew weaker and asked his wife to send for the doctor. These were his last words. He became weaker and sank into unconscionsness from which he never recovered and shortly after midnight his spirit took its flight.

Mr. Quirmbach was born in Nassau, Germany, in 1838 and with his parents emigrated to Buffalo, N. Y., when about eight years of age. He spent many years of his boyhood there, the family removing to Hespeler afterwards. He then went to Preston himself to live and while there was appointed bailiff and espoused his wife. Some nineteen years ago he came to Berlin and for a year or better conducted a hotel in the old stand, now no longer used, near the Fairview boarding house; after which he was asked to accept a position as nightwatchman by the merchants and bankers of Berlin. For eighteen years, with scarcely an interruption and with a faithfulness and loyalty to duty seldom equalled, he performed his task until a severe cold, contracted during his hours of duty, led him to a bed of sickness that has resulted in his demise.

He leaves a wife, six sons and one daughter to mourn his death. Three sons are at home, the others are in Ohio, Indiana and Montana respect ively. Mr. Quirnibach was a Conservative in polities and an adherent of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. He was a member of Grand River Lodge No. 151 A. F. and A. M., Berlin, and will be buried with Masonie honors by its members, Well known and valued for his amiable, honorable traits of character, his death will arouse a wide feeling of sorrow in Berlin and other places and his family will receive the sympathy of the community.

The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon, June 28th at 2 p, m. to Mt. Hope Cemetery from his late residence.
He was aged 59 years, 1 mos. 25 days.
