    Notes:

Passing of an Aged Resident Mrs. Birley, Sr, Attained the Ripe Age of 90 Years

On Tuesday morning, Aug. 29, there passed away one of the oldest and earliest settlers of the district in the person of Sarah Birley, relict of the late Charles Birley, aged 90 years. Her maiden name was Sarah Locker and her birth place Derbyshire, England, where she was married, coming to Canada with her husband in 1856 and settling in South Dumfries, near Paris, and had lived in the community practically ever since. Some idea of the changes which have taken place in deceased's lifetime may be gathered from the fact that she crossed the Atlantic in a sailing vessel and was 14 weeks in doing so. This now highly cultivated and flourished district was then pretty much all bush, traversed by roaving bands of Indians and wild beasts. Here the new-comers hewed out a home for themselves and endured the hardships incidental to pioneer life. Her companion, however, did not long survive, predeceasing his wife by 52 years, thus leaving her to carry on the struggle alone and with a young family on her hands. That she succeeded admirably was due to an indomitable spirit and untiring zeal. In religion she allied herself with the Presbyterian Church. The family surviving comprise one daughter and three sons, viz.: Mrs. Campbell, Galt, Chas. H., North Dumfries; Geo. T. Golfport, Miss., and Thos. H., Kamsack, Sask. The funeral took place yesterday from the residence of the son Charles, to Paris Plains, North, Cemetery.
