BOWMAN.-Wendel C., third son of Elias and Polly (Clemens) Bowman, was born near Breslau, Waterloo Co., Ont., Dec. 10, 1835. In the spring of 1863 he went with his parents to Kent Co., Mich., which was then a woodland wilderness. He was married to Hannah, daughter of Amos Clemens. To this union were born one son and two daughters. His wife died while his youngest child was an infant and he was married in the early spring of 1875 to Barbara, daughter of the late John Meyers and widow of the late Benjamin Brubacher, of Waterloo Co., Ont. To this second union were born four sons and three daughters. His companion and all his children, including two step-sons, Albert M. and Josephus M. Brubacher of Elkhart, Ind. survive; also 11 grandchildren, four brothers and four sisters and a large circle of other relatives and friends. He had been in failing health for several years, due to a stroke of paralysis, a recurrence which ended his life on the 17th of June 1902 at the age of 66 Y., 6 M., 7 D. Funeral services on the 19th at his late residence and at the Gains U. B. Church by Bish. Horace T., assisted by Alvin P. Barnaby. Text, 1 Pet. 1: 3. Interment in the cemetery adjoining. Deceased was a faithful member of the United Brethren Church (Old Constitution), and his sterling qualities and strength of Christian character endeared him to all who recognized and esteem true worth, and while our loss of a beloved companion, father, brother, neighbor and friend is a sore one, yet we have the blessed assurance that for him it is everlasting gain. The annual Bowman Family Reunion was to have been held on the 18th, but this happy event was changed into a sorrowing gathering on the day following, when we followed to the grave the remains of one who was always a prominent figure in these annual gatherings. He has gone before to the great reunion of the redeemed in heaven. May his oft expressed wish and prayer, that we might all meet as an unbroken family in heaven, be fulfilled.

The first postmaster at Blair was Wendal Bowman who served from 1858 to 1863. Mr. Bowman was succeeded by Henry Bechtel Sr. who operated the post office from 1863 to 1865. Mr. Bechtel was in turn succeeded by John R. Renshaw who was Blair's postmaster from 1865 to 1892. It was during Mr. Renshaw's tenure, in 1874, that the Grand Trunk Railway built a station in Blair and the post office moved to that facility. With the move Mr. Renshaw became stationmaster as well as postmaster.

Elias Bowman, "(son of No. 34 and same as No. 46) the seventh son of Rev. Joseph and Maria (Bechtel) Baumann, was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania, May 28th, 1809. In 1816 he came to Canada with his parents who settled at Blair, in this County (See No. 34). In the year 1829 he was married to Polly, daughter of Jacob and Susannah (Dierstein) Clemens. She was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, July 12, 1811, came to Canada with her parents in 1826, and died in Kent County, Michigan, May 28th, 1886. Soon after their marriage they moved on the farm now possessed by Simon Schiedel and Moses S. Cressman (each party possessing a part), near Breslau. Here they resided until March, 1863, when they sold their farm and moved to Kent County, Michigan, where he died August 21st, 1875. They have had a family of fourteen children, all born in the county of Waterloo"

BOWMAN. - On the 28th of May, in Gaines Twp., Kent Co., Mich., of the infirmities of old age, Polly, widow of Elias Bowman, aged 74 years, 10 months and 16 days. She was born on the 12th of July, 1811, in Bucks Co., Pa. In childhood, with her father Jacob Clemens, she moved to Waterloo Co., Ontario, which was then a wilderness. In the year 1829 she was joined in marriage to Elias Bowman of the same place. To them were born eight sons and six daughters, ten of whom are yet living. In 1863, she with her husband, moved to Mich., where she has since resided. She embraced religion in early life was united to the Mennonite church, and lived a consistent life. She also had the joy of seeing all her children embrace religion. She was buried on the 31st of May at the Gaines U. B. Meeting house, where an immense congregation had assembled to pay their last tribute of respect to this beloved "mother of Israel." Funeral services were held by H. T. Barnaby.

He was married to Mary Baer, who was born January 23rd, 1772, and died October 29th 1842. In 1802 he was ordained as minister of the Mennonite body. He was a good man, and his sermons always made a deep impression upon the audiences who assembled at places of worship on Sabbath days. In May, 1816, he with his family moved to Canada and settled near Blair, Ontario. The family consisted of thirteen children."

On February 3rd, 1810, his brothers and sisters conveyed by release to him the dwellings together with seventy-six acres of land, being part of the old homestead. Here he resided until April 7th, 1825, when he and his wife sold the farm to Henry Ziegler for $2933. After selling his farm he and his family, together with others, moved to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, opposite Breslau, on the farm now owned by Joseph Cressman, where he resided until his death which occurred April 8th, 1876. His wife was born November 11, 1789, and died September 24th 1861. To them were born Three children, all born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania."

Abraham S. Clemens, "the youngest son of Abraham and Mary (Steiner) Clemens, was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, March 7th, 1790. On May 19, 1812, he was married to Rachel Dierstein who was born November 15th, 1791, and died December 3rd, 1864. In 1825 they moved to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, about one mile west of Breslau, on lot No. 123, German Company's Tract. Here they resided until 1837 when he purchased part of lot No. 111, about two miles south of Breslau. Here they resided until their deaths. His death took place December 25, 1867. A good many years before his death he was ordained a deacon of the Mennonite Church, a position for which he was well qualified. Many a wholesome advice did he give to his congregation. His practice was to visit all the members of his field of labor twice a year and during such visits he would give words of cheer and comfort to many a weary pilgrim. He encouraged them to look to Christ in all their trials and troubles and reminded them of the many cheering promises given unto all who put their trust in him who died for all. To them was born a family of eight children"

OBITUARY FOR ABRAHAM S. CLEMMENS

Died on the first day of the recent Christmas holidays, that is on December 25th last, Abraham S. Clemmens died in Waterloo township, Waterloo County, Canada West of apoplexy. He was formerly of Montgomery county, Pennsylvania. He was born in 1790 in Lower Salford township, in the aforementioned Montgomery county, and died at the age of 77 years, 9 months, and 18 days. He entered the holy state of matrimony on May 19, 1812 with Rachel Derstein of Bucks county, and emigrated to Canada with his family in the year 1825. He was happily married for approximately 52 years, and a widower for 3 years and 22 days. He sired 8 children, 6 of whom are still living, namely 3 sons and 3 daughters.

His descendants, with 51 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren, number consequently, 89 souls. On the day he died, he arose healthy and happy, sat down to breakfast after he had directed a loud and earnest prayer to the Giver of all good. He shoved aside a coffee cup which was sitting near him, and reached for the jug, to pour himself a drink of water, when suddenly, his hand fell. His son George, who had also just risen from the table, hurried over to help his father; his soul wanted to take leave of his body, and no human effort was of any help to him. He was speedily carried to his bed; but, he did not open his eyes again; his speech became weak and during the night that followed, approximately at 11.30 p.m., he slept away to his Lord. The deceased was generally respected and loved, and after he had accomplished much good, and ,we hope, useful things during his active life, he peacefully paid the debt of nature. For many years, he was the head of the Mennonite congregation there, and his eye was ever watchful over his flock. On the 29th instant, his body was taken to Cressman's Mennonite meeting-house, accompanied by a large number of friends and acquaintances, and committed to mother-earth, on which occasion the Rev. Hagey (at the deceased's house), and the Rev. Enoch Derstein (at the grave), spoke words of comfort and instruction to the crowd present, based on the text in the latter part of Verse 12, Chapter 4 of the Book of Amos: " Because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, 0 Israel!"

She was buried on the 6th at Cressman's grave yard, when in the meeting house at the same place, funeral discourses were delivered from Jn. 5: 24, 25, and Rev. 14: 13.

"... On the 18th day of June, 1812, President Madison declared war against England. This placed the Pennsylvania people in a very trying position and as they could not be induced to take up arms, they were pressed into service as teamsters and were obliged to furnish their own horses. Ox-teams were employed when no horses were to be had. Those who were required to serve in this capacity were Christian Schneider Jr., Peter Erb, Joseph Eby, Samuel Eschelman, Benjamin Springer, Frederick Herner, Jacob Bock, Henry Pannebecker, John Scheirich, Henry Wismer, John Biehn, Adam Shupe and Wildfong.

In January, 1813, General Proctor defeated the Americans near Detroit, capturing General Wilkinson with 500 men. In September General Harrison having been joined by a fierce body of riflemen from Kentucky, advanced towards Detroit in such force that General Proctor crossed the Detroit River and retreated up the Thames. On being followed by the American Army of 3500 men, he made a stand at Moraviantown with 800 British and 500 Indians under Tecumseh. This warrior was killed, and Proctor retreated in great confusion to Burlington Heights in order to join the Niagara Army. A number of the Waterloo people were up at the battle on the Thames. These Waterloo boys acting as teamsters had taken shelter in a swamp near by while the battle was being fought. An officer of the British army, seeing that all was lost, gave them warning, said 'Boys, all is lost, clear out and make the best you can,' upon which some ran, while others unhitched their horses and rode off for their lives. Christian Schneider Jr., who carried the money-safe on his wagon, cleared out on his horses, leaving the wagon with all its contents behind. In this defeat old Adam Shupe was taken prisoner by the Americans. He was taken before General Harrison who, perceiving his innocent and harmless appearance, dismissed him and granted him permission to return to his Canadian home. He lost both his horses and wagon. Christian Schneider was away the greater part of the summer. On his first trip he had a two-horse team. After being home a few weeks he had to go again, this time with a four-horse team. During this war which lasted a little more than two years, quite a number of small battles were fought in the Niagara Peninsula and in the vicinity of Detroit. Quite a few of these Pennsylvania Dutch boys were pressed to serve as teamsters and exposed to all manner of danger, but strange to say, not one lost his life through the war.

On the 24th of December, 1814, peace was made between England and the United States, leaving each in exactly the same position as they had been before the war. After peace was restored the government of Canada fully compensated those teamsters for their losses during the war and for their valuable services. Christian Schneider Jr. was paid $5.00 a day for the time he served with a two-horse team, and $8.00 per day for a four-horse team, besides they were paid for horses and wagons that were lost during the time they served the government."
