    E. R. BEGER.

Among the long established and successful business enterprises of New Hamburg must be ranked that of Mr. E. R. Beger, carriage manufacturer. It is 38 years since Mr. Beger located as a blacksmith on the property where now stands a substantial 3 story brick factory. The main building is about 6o feet square, exclusive of the 3o x 4o foot blacksmith shop which is detached. The firm turns out about 100 vehicles of one kind and another, annually. These consist of buggies, stanhopes, traps, runabouts, cutters and sleighs and it is safe to say are not surpassed in point of beauty and durability by the output of any other Canadian firm. A thorough mastery of his business combined with a strict integrity and a disposition to give every man a square deal, constitute the corner stone upon which Mr. Beger has so well builded. lie numbers among his patrons many of the best people, not only in Waterloo County, but also in the surrounding counties and even farther afield. Indeed, so flattering has been the reception of his carriages that Mr. Beger intends to invade the West and will shortly open an agency out there. Actively associated with him is his son, Mr. R. E. Beger, who is of great assistance to his father in energetically pushins; forward a growing business. Mr. Beger has always taken an interest in public affairs and spared neither his time nor his money to advance the interests of New Hamburg. He had the honor of filling the Reeve's chair for two years, but prior to that had served at one time and another some 25 years in the Council.

    E. R. BEGER

The subject of this sketch was born in Saxony, Germany, in 1837 and came to America in 1858. He saw considerable of the New World, having travelled over 27 states of the union. In 1862 he came to Hamburg and, after working several years for other parties, be commenced business for himself in 1886 in Hamburg. He is a general blacksmith by trade. His establishment is one of the largest in this section, the building bring a three-storey brick structure 40x60 feet which he has well occupied with buggies, carriages, stock, etc. In the course of a year he manufactures a large number of carriages, buggies and wagons and does a large amount of repairing. His vehicles are noted for strength and durability while at the same time they are neat and attractive. He employs from ten to twelve men, three or four of whom are constantly employed in the blacksmith shop. Is this department as well as in the wood work department Mr. Beger employs only first class mechanic, the splendid work he turns out being the proof thereof. The third story of his building was used at one time as a ball by the Oldfellows, but it is now used as storage room for stock, of which there is a large amount kept constantly on band Mr. Beger is the custodian of the repairs for the Massey Harris Company's machines, and as there are large number of these machines and implements in use in this section, to look after this business alone is no easy matter. Mr. Beger does not work at the trade now, his time being about all taken up in giving the different departments of his large establishment his personal attention.
