    Notes:

    Death of a Wilmot Pioneer.

Last Friday afternoon [May 15th.] the remains of our departed friend and neighbor, Mr. Arthur Barber, were laid to rest beside his late wife who died two years ago,in St.James' Churchyard. A large number of friends and neighbors turned out to pay their last respects to one who had lived so long in our midst. The pall bearers were Messrs. Menno and George Bean, R. C. Tye, R. N. Kerr, Robert Gilmore and Wm.G. Smith. The rector Rev. James Ward, preached a very impressive sermon from the 5th verse, 31st Psalm, "Into thine Hand I commit my spirit, thou hast redeemed me O Lord, God of truth." Are late neighbor came from Ireland in 1837 and settled near Toronto, where he remained five years. That was at the time of the rebellion, and Mr. B. enlisted in a cavalry troop for the defence of Ontario. In 1842 be walked from Toronto to Wilmot (nearly all people walked at that time) in search of land. In the township of Waterloo, near Strasburg, he engaged a bed for the night at old Tom Sherrington's who kept a small tavern. The landlord came to his room and asked him if he I would take a bed-fellow. Mr. B. objected as he had paid for his bed. The landlord told him that he was a farmer like himself, so he shared his bed with him. His bed-fellow turned out to be Mr. Crowell, who had moved to Wilmot two years before, and as they journeyed a long together, Mr. Barber told his companion that he was looking for land, so Mr. Crowell told him there were 200 acres to sell next to his. Mr. C. had taken up the two hundred acres on which James Barber and Edwin Gilmore now reside. Mr. Barber took up the 200 acres and his brother, Robert, resided on the north half until he sold it to Mr. Levi Master a few years ago, and Mr. A. Barber lived on his lot fifty-four years up to the time of his death and his son, Bert, is on the farm, now. About fifty years ago Mr. B. married Miss Fanny Graham and raised a large family of boys and one daughter, who is the wife of George M. Smith who resides on the farm adjoining her father's. Jobn, the eldest, resides near Palmerston, James, Arthur and Bert have good farms, and Robert, who is a doctor, resides in Chicago, and four ons died some years ago. During the past winter our departed friend was tenderly nursed by his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Bert Barber, who watched over him with more than a daughter's love and care. Your correspondent had the pleasure of seeing him a few times during his illness and he was always happy and contented, looking forward to meet his loved partner in life, who had passed away two years before him. We extend our sympathies to the children of our late neighbor, who was a kind and affectionate husband and father, Soon the old settlers who worked hard to clear the land and worked to make fair Ontario what it is, will have passed away. They had many difficulties to overcome, but with patience and perseverance they overcame them all.
