When a young man he was married to Miss Hannah Master and resided in New Hamburg where he was engaged in the mercantile business. Some forty years ago he moved to one of the Western States where he died in 1856, leaving a family of six children"

Jacob Erb, "the fifth son of Christian and Maria (Scherch) Erb, was born in Warwick Township, Pennsylvania, January 25th, 1768. He was married to Salome Graybill who was born August 8th, 1778, and died May 6th, 1821. In 1806 they, in company with his brother Abraham and others, came to Canada and located on lot No. 17, German Company's Tract, a little to the west of Berlin. Here they resided until their deaths. He died March 20th, 1834, leaving a family of thirteen children"

Mr. Master was the only member of the family who settled in Canada. He with his wife and family of four children moved to this county in 1819 and settled, September 19th, on lot No. 1, 1st Concession, lower block, Waterloo Township, about halfway between Preston and Galt. Here they raised a large family"

He migrated from Chester in 1819, arriving in New Hope (Hespeler) in September, with wife and family. He first bought 100 acres in 1821 from his father-in-law, Abraham Clemens in BLB3-10. In 1830 he bought another 200 acre farm in BLB2-1 for £375.

1831 Assessment: lots: BBF1w BLB2-1, acres: 310, cultivated acres: 120, horses: 2, cow: 3, oxen: 2, men: 3, value: 229, value per acre: .74.

In 1834 a new set of township officers was created. These were the "fence viewers" whose job it was to settle disputes between neighbours as to the value of fencing provided by a neighbour, i.e. If livestock broke a fence down and caused damage to another's fields the fence viewer would decide if the fence had been up to standard and to what extent the damage was and how much money was owing in compensation. (Prior to 1834 this had been the job of the "Overseers of Highways", who checked roads, fences, ditch draining etc. and decided what maintenance work was needed and who was to help.The Overseer had complete control over who in his division was to help and called upon persons had to go and bring whatever tools were requested by the Overseer.) Fence viewers also had to settle disputes over drainage.

In January 1837 Isaac and Jacob Shantz Jr. were appointed Fence viewers for the Lower Part of Waterloo, east of the Grand River, Daniel Stauffer was for Lower Part of Waterloo west of the Grand River, Philip Bleam was for Preston and Adam Winters was appointed for the village of Waterloo.

By 1861 most of the family had moved from the district and none show up in the 1861 assessment.

Mary Clemens, "the eldest daughter of Abraham and Rebecca (Miller) Clemens, was born in Pennsylvania, about the year 1792 or 93. She was married to Isaac Master. They resided near Galt, Ontario where they raised a large family. She died May 26th, 1870."

Mrs. Mary Master nee Clemens, was born in Pennsylvania, of German extraction, and married Isaac Master "of the same nationality". They came to Canada "as early as 1819", settling in Waterloo Twp., on the road that now connects Preston and Galt. For some years before her husband's death, they lived near Berlin. After his death, she lived with her daughter, Mrs. Edward Ellis, Puslinch. She died there, May 28, 1870; age 77.

Christian Erb, "was born in Warwick Township, in October, 1734. He was married, in 1756, to Maria Scherch. She was born in 1737. They resided in Warwich [Warwick] Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. When well advanced in years they came to Canada, and made their home with their daughter, Elizabeth (Mrs. Christian Schneider), who resided at Doon where they both died. He died July 7th, 1810, and she died August 17th, 1814. Both lie buried in the Blair cemetery. They had a family of twelve children, namely:...Of the twelve children of the family, seven, namely Abraham, Jacob, John, Magdalena, Anna, Mary, and Elizabeth, resided in Canada, and two of the children of Susannah, Mary and John."

WARNING: In my view (Jim McKane), the preponderance of the evidence suggests that at least the first 5 of Abraham's children were born to Rebecca Miller and the last one, two, or three of his children to Mary Custer. Hannah and Elizabeth could have been the last children of Rebecca (and I have listed them this way) or the first two children of Mary. Apparently all the children were born in Chester Co., PA before Abraham and his second wife moved to Canada. But I have no primary sources to confirm the dates of the two marriages or which wife was the mother of each child.

She was married to Abraham Clemens who was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, in 1764, and died near Hespeler, in 1819. In 1809 they moved to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, Ontario, near Hespeler where she died in 1819, being the same year in which her husband died." [this is apparently in error, the tombstone and family bible indicate it was Mary who died in 1819 and was born in 1763]
