    Notes:

    ELLIS, JAMES HENRY

It is with the deepest regret, that we chronicle the death of Captain Ellis, of grinder's consumption, at his home in St. Catharines, on Sunday, November 26, 1905. Although for some years, not a resident of this vicinity, he was widely and favourably known in Hespeler and Puslinch, where he spent many years of his life. His many friends will never again hear his cheery voice or feel the hearty grasp of his hand. He was the youngest son of Thomas Ellis of Puslinch. He received his education at S. S. #11, under the tutorship of Mr. R. H. Knowles and qualifying as a teacher, he taught for some years in Puslinch and Dumfries. His health failing, he travelled west and spent several years in St. Louis and other points in the south west and while there, married Catharine Gregory. Returning to Canada about 1883, he lived on the homestead "Walnut Villa" for some years and served a term in the Puslinch Township Council and was gazetted as Captain of E. Company, 29th regiment. Some few years ago, he again left the farm and moved to Niagara Falls and later, to St. Catharines, where he died. He was a man possessing strong personalities. His broad sympathies and his genius for organizing made him a prominent figure in the benefit societies of Hespeler, in which he took a deep interest. He was an efficient officer and a born soldier, like his four older brothers, all of whom have held commissions in the militia, three of them having seen active service. His aged father still survives; also two brothers, Edward of Toulon, Manitoba; and Nathan of New York. He leaves a family to two children. His body was brought to Hespeler for interment, the funeral taking place from the home of Joseph Kitchen to the Hespeler Cemetery on Sunday at 2. Six members of his company acted as pallbearers and he was laid to rest with military honours.

-Information from the death certificate: Of Park St. in St. Catharines. Died at age 49 years, of pulmonary tuberculosis.

-Information from birth certificates: Children of James H. Ellis and Catherine Gregory were Arthur Cameron Ellis (b. Jun. 28, 1881); Ethel Maud Ellis (b. Mar. 3, 1888) married Frank Baker; William James (Jan. 8 - Jan. 19, 1891).
