    Mr. Gottfried Bauer

Another of New Hamburg's early residents passed away in the person of Mr. Gottfried Bauer, who died at his home on Saturday, May 16th, at the age of 80 year, 7 months and 8 days.

The late Mr. Bauer was born in Auerbach, Baden, Germany, on October 8th, 1850, and came to the United States with his parents and sisters when he was 10 years of age. The family settled in Kansas, but 8 years later Br. Bauer came to New Hamburg where he married Miss Louisa Haussamen on September 8th, 1872. To them were born four children, William E., of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Louise (Mrs. J. Kaufman) of Detroit, Carrie (Mrs. F.C. Cookson) and Miss Lillian Bauer, of New Hamburg. These together with his widow survive to mourn their loss of an affectionate husband and father. There are also three grandchildren, Mrs. R. F. Carson, of Stratford, Ford Kauffman, of Louisville, Kentucky, Arnold Bauer, of Albuquerque, and one great-grandchild, Kurt Kauffman, one sister, Mrs. Kate Funk, of Ness City, Kansas.

In religion Mr. Bauer was originally a member of the Reformed Lutheran Church, but of late years he has worshipped n the Baptist Church where he was always a faithful attendant upon the services of God's house and a regular contributor to the work of the Lord. His many friends knew him as one who was of a kind and friendly disposition, never speaking ill of anyone. He will be much missed in the home and in the church as well as by those in the community who have learned to welcome the kind greeting which was always ready.

Upon coming to New Hamburg the deceased followed his trade as a cooper and purchased the business of his father-in-law, the late George Haussamen, after the latter's death and carried the business on successfully until he retired about 12 years ago. He had been always active until a few months ago, when health began to fail, but was up and around until a week before his demise.

The funeral was held at the home on Wednesday afternoon and was largely attended. The service was conducted by his pastor, Rev. E.G. Dale, who brought a message from our Lord's Transfiguration and to a voice out of the cloud which said "This is my beloved son, hear ye Him." A mixed quartette rendered two selections, "Jesus Saviour Pilot Me" and "No Night There". The floral tributes were very beautiful, conveying the sympathy of friends far and near.

Burial took place in Riverside Cemetery, the remains being carried to their last resting place by his old friends, Messrs. L.G. Pequegnat, S. Luckhardt, J. Bowman, O. Boettger, F. Debus and E. Cassell.
