    Death of Mrs. Rush
    - After an illness of two weeks with pneumonia, Mrs. Fannie Rush passed away at her home here on Monday afternoon. She had been progressing favorably until Saturday when a sudden change for the worse set in and no hope was held out for her recovery. Mrs. Rush had been a highly esteemed resident of New Hamburg for over twenty years and was an active member of the Methodist Church. The news of her death was received with deep regret and much sympathy is felt for the sorrowing family. The late Mrs. Rush was a daughter of the late Isaac Eby and was in her 59th year. Her husband, the late Geo. M. Rush, predeceased her twenty-four years ago. She leaves two sons and one daughter, Eby and George, of Waterloo, and Pearl at home. One daughter Edna (Mrs. Harold Perkins) died in Toronto during the influenza epidemic of 1918. She is also survived by her aged mother and several brothers and sisters. The funeral was held privately yesterday afternoon from her late residence to Riverside cemetery and was conducted by Rev. Mr. Voaden.

Isaac Eby, "the eldest son of Benjamin Eby, was born in Berlin, July 30th, 1808. He spent his single days at home on his father's farm. On October 30th, 1831, he was married to Veronica, daughter of John and Mary (Shantz) Shoemaker, who was born February 2nd, 1815, and died July 20th, 1894. In November of the same year of their marriage they moved on their farm, situated two and one-half miles east of Berlin, being the north-west part of lot No. 120, German Company's Tract, in the township and county of Waterloo, containing by admeasurement 188 acres. The farm was, with the exception of a few acres where their first house and log stables stood, heavily timbered with all kinds of hard wood. Wolves, bears and deer were quite numerous then, and the howling of wolves was their evening band. Here they lived for nearly forty-three years. A few months before his death he disposed of his farm to Mr. Moses Betzner. Of the numerous assistants they had on their farm George Schmidt, afterwards a minister of the Gospel in the Mennonite Church, James Potter, now residing in Berlin, Jacob Becker, Barbara Rudy, now Mrs. Valentine Knechtel and mother of Rev. S. R. Knechtel, and Martha Allardyce, now of Toronto, were their favorites. These were always considered as members of their family. To Isaac Eby and his wife was born a family of ten children"

    __________

Eby.-At her residence, King St. East, Berlin, Ontario, at 9-50 A.M., July 20, 1894, Sister Veronica Eby, widow of the late Bro. Isaac Eby, aged 79 y. 5 m. 18 d. Funeral on the 23d at 2 o'clock, from her late residence to the Mennonite Cemetery. Services were conducted in English by S. R. Knechtel, (Evangelical) from John 11:25, 26, and in German by Bro. Sam'l Bowman, from 2 Cor. 3:1. A large concourse of friends and relatives had gathered to pay their last tributes of respect to the deceased sister.

Many could not get into the spacious meeting house. Thus one by one the first generations of Canadian born settlers in Waterloo county pass away. Her husband, Bro. Isaac Eby, was the first white child born in Waterloo county. Sis Eby was an earnest Christian, and her place in the Eby Mennonite M. H. in Berlin was very seldom vacant at the time of meeting. Since the death of Bro. Eby she had been living in town. She leaves a family of children grandchildren and great grandchildren and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn her departure. Several of her children preceded her to the grave. Peace to her ashes.

David Stauffer, "son of Jacob and Mary (Hoch) Stauffer, was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, December 31st, 1813, and was raised in Butler County, same state. He was married, in 1836, to Anna Maria, daughter of Samuel and Polly (Bechtel) Shelly. She was born May 29th, 1819. On May 2nd, 1848, they, with their family of five children, left Harmony, Butler County, Pennsylvania, and moved to Canada and arrived at Berlin during the latter part of May. During the remainder of the year 1848 they resided on the farm formerly owned by the late William Moyer, now in possession of Isadore B. Snyder. In spring, 1849, they moved to Bridgeport, on the farm now possessed by Dilman G. Moyer where they had the misfortune of being burned out. In 1854, they moved on the old 'Burkholder Farm' one mile north of the town of Waterloo where they resided until 1859, then they moved on the old 'Henry Martin Farm' one mile north of the Martin Mennonite Meeting House. Here they resided until 1864, when he purchased a farm about two miles north-west of Heidelberg where they resided for ten years, then he sold his farm to a Mr. Compass, in 1874, and moved to Conestogo, having bought Mr. Charles Hendry's property, where they now reside. They have have a family of thirteen children, of whom three died in infancy, .."

    DAVID STAUFFER,

While in Conestogo last week I was afforded an opportunity of meeting this venerable citizen. Mr. Stauffer was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, in 1813, being now in the 85th year of his age. His general appearance and unimpared mind and body would lead one to believe that he had not yet reached the sixties. He came to Canada about forty-eight years ago, and recollects when Berlin had only one mercantile establishment, then kept by one Fred Miller, and Jake and John Hoffman were about to open another. He has lived in Conestogo twenty-three years, living a retired life with his wife, who is now in ber 78 th year. Mr. Stauffer claims no relationship with the numerous family of Stauffers in Waterloo County, though his ancestors are of the same nationality and espouse the same religious faith. I have yet to see the person who has lived eighty- five years who can show less marks of an advanced age than Mr. Stauffer. He is a record breaker, and no mistake.

In my next letter Winterbourne and its oldest citizens will be my subject. I believe this village takes the lead in the county for old people.
