    Notes:

    Edward George Heise a lifelong resident of Preston. First employed by Judge Clement R. Hanning, then by Harry C. Edgar and later as an account by Hurlbut Shoe Co. In 1927 he was elected to a seat on Preston council, next year resigning to become Preston's Clerk/Treasurer, resigning in 1954 due to ill health.

    E. G. Heise, Ex-Preston Clerk, Dies

    PRESTON - Edward George Heise, 71, town clerk here for 37 years, died today at South Waterloo Memorial Hospital, Galt. He had been in poor health for several years, and retired the end of 1954 for that reason. Mr. Heise was born in Preston and was a life-long resident. He was employed by Judge J. R. Hanning for some years, than was with A. C. Edgar, who was secretary of the light and water commission. Mr. Heise's interest in municipal affairs was maintained from that time, although be was an accountant later at the Hurlbut Shoe Company before making a career of municipal service. He was a member of council at one time. He was a member of the Masonic Order, and attended St. John's Anglican Church. Survivors include his wife, the former Frances Gothorpe; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Joan) Smith, Calgary, two granddaughters and six sisters, Miss Elizabeth Heise, Preston; Mrs. J. (Emma) Mumford, Freeport, Miss Dorothea Heise, Toronto; Mrs. C. C. (Louise) Hahn, RR 1, Preston; Mrs. Lottie Thorer, Lansing, Mich. and Mrs. E. (Clare) Riley, Peterboro. The body will be at the Stager-Pass Funeral Home until Monday afternoon, when the funeral service will be conducted at two o'clock in St. John's Anglican Church, with burial in Parkiawn Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined.

    Passing of Preston's Oldest Manufacturer
    The Late Henry Heise Conducted Furniture Factory on Main Street

    In the passing of Henry Heise Preston loses its oldest pioneer manufacturer, whose death occurred on Wednesday afternoon. The late Henry Heise was born in Muehlhausen, Germany, nearly 75 years ago and with his parents came to Preston when 15 years of age. He learned the trade of cabinet maker and for a number of years conducted a furniture factory where the Mickus hardware store now stands and later he operated a sawmill at the rear end of the lot, finally building a very substantial mill on Hamilton street. In religion he ws a Lutheran and was independent in politics with Liberal learnings [sic]. He took unto himself as a partner in life Dorothea Stumpfle, who survives him, and to whom were born ten children - Mrs. George Kanmaeher, Preston; Miss Elizabeth, Medicine Hat; Henry, Hamilton; Miss Dora, Preston; Mrs. J. Mumford, Stratford; Mrs. C. C. Hahn, Kitchener; Miss Lottie, Edward G. and Miss Clara at home; Pte. William H., now in France; and a brother, Christopher Heise, in Galt. The funeral will take place from his late residence, Queen street on Saturday at 2: 30 p.m. Interment in Preston, cemetery.

    In the calling away of Henry Heise at his home on Wednesday at 3 pm, Preston looses one of its oldest citizens. Some time ago it was found necessary to amputate his leg owing to blood poisoning and this with his age proved too much for the late gentleman. He was born in Muhlhausen, Germany, on April 10th, 1842, being at the time of his death in his 75th year. Besides a sorrowing widow he is survived by the following sons and daughters: Mrs. Geo. Kanmacher, Mrs. John Mumford, Mrs. C.C. Hahn, Miss Elizabeth, Miss Dorothy, Miss Lottie, Miss Clara, and Henry, Edward and William. His only surviving brother, Christian, resides at Galt. The funeral will take place on Saturday afternoon at 2: 30pm from the family residence, Queen Street, to Preston Cemetery.

    Widow Stûmpfle

    An old settler, the widow of Michael Stümpfle, (who died 22 years ago in Preston,) nee Roos, died on Sunday here in the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Quirmbach. She was born in 1816 in Alsace, came to Buffalo with her parents in 1824, and from there, on foot, to Preston, where she married. Six years ago, she came to Berlin, to her daughter's. The deceased is survived by one brother, C. Roos, in Galt; nine children, 42 grand-children, and 6 great-grandchildren. The children are: Mrs. Quirmbach in Berlin; Mrs. C. Weiman in Winnipeg; Mrs. L. Welte, Charles, George and Herman in Terre Haute, Ind.; Mrs. H. Heise, Henry and John in Preston. Burial followed on Tuesday in Preston.
