    PTE. J. SPOHR (SPAHR) KILLED - It has been officially reported that Pte. John Edward Spohr was killed in action on December 5. He enlisted last March with a Fort William unit, and went overseas in July. He was slightly wounded last October, and his death occurred shortly after his return to the trenches. Pte. Spohr was 32 years of age, and before enlisting he worked as an engineer on the Government road running out of Graham, Ont. His mother resides in New Hamburg, Ont. She recently received a letter from his chaplain, Capt. (Rev.) D. E. D. Robertson, which stated that his death was due to a shell wound in his abdomen. He is buried near Villiers au Bois (Toronto Star - January 4, 1917)

    Spahr, John Edward Private. Enlisted March 1915 with the Machine Gun Section of the 5th Battalion and transferred to 94th Battalion in England. Lutheran. Born at North Easthope, Perth, Ontario on January 5, 1884 and educated there. He was unmarried. He was killed in action December 5, 1916 at Villiers-en-Bois, France. He was struck by a shell in the abdomen. Mrs. Clara Spahr, New Hamburg, is his mother. Florence P. Bradley, New Hamburg.1a

    Notes:

    Death of Mrs. John Spahr

    After an illness of only a few days with pneumonia Mrs. John Spahr passed away at her home here on Sunday morning last in her 61st year. Deceased had been a highly esteemed resident of New Hamburg for the past twelve years and previous to that resided on a farm two miles west of the village. The news of her death was received with deep regret by her many friends and the sympathy of the community is extended to the bereaved family in their sad loss. Her husband predeceased her about three years ago. The eldest son, John, gave his life in the war and another son Robert, met death by being run over by a train. The surviving children are William, of New Hamburg, Leslie, of New Ontario, Mrs. H. Altoffer, of Cleveland; and Mrs. T. B. Maxwell, of Kitchener. The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon to Trinity Lutheran Church for service and interment took place in Lingelbach Cemetery, Gravel Road.

    Interment took place in the Lingelbach cemetery of the late Mrs. John Spahr on Thursday last. She died in New Hamburg on Sunday, May 2nd, after an illness of only a few days with pneumonia in her 61st year. Deceased was a highly esteemed resident of New Hamburg for the past twelve years, previous to that time residing on a farm in our midst. The news of her death was received with deep regret by her many friends and the sympathy of the community is extended to the bereaved family.
