Crushed to Death
Fatality Near Berlin
A sad accident occurred on the farm of Mr. Oliver Betzner, on the Breslau road, on Monday evening, which has carried sorrow and mourning into the home. Mr. Betzner's four year old son, Leighton, was crushed to death by the large door of the driving shed. Just how the accident occurred is not known, as no one saw it happen, but it is supposed the little fellow was playing around or trying to close the heavy door, which was blown shut with great force, catching him a little below the stomach and inflicting an injury which proved fatal. The father had just returned from a trip to Waterloo, accompanied by the child, and set him down at the barn door while he went to put the rig away. The mother came out to get the boy. When she arrived the sad accident had occurred and her son was dead. The ground leading to the barn entrance slopes upward and apparently the child was walking out when caught by the door, knocked down, dragged a short distance on his back and finally pinned at the middle of the body and his life crushed out.

The bereaved parents have the sympathy of the entire community. Their son was a particularly bright and winning child.

Killed by a Bar Door - The three year old son of Mr. Oliver Betzner, on Breslau road, about two miles east of Berlin, was instatntly killed on Tuesday afternoon by a barn door. The door was broken loose from the fastenings by the strong wind, and swept around, knocking down the child, who was standing in its course, and pinning him to the ground.

A Wedding Party

A very pleasing ceremony took place last Tuesday afternoon at the house of Mr. Samuel Hallman of Blenheim, when his youngest daughter Samantha was united in marriage, by Rev. Jacob Detweiler, to Mr. Oliver Betzner of Natchez. The bride was supported by her cousin, Miss Sylvia Bingeman, of Berlin, while Mr. Ephraim Betzner, the bridegroom's brother performed a similar duty for him. The ceremony was witnessed by some seventy of the nearest relatives and friends of the contracting parties, after which a sumptuous supper was served. During the evening the gathering was entertained by vocal and instrumental music, after which the bridal party drove to Berlin where amid showers of rice they boarded the midnight train intending to take a trip to Grand Rapids, in which place they will remain for a few days. We wish the newly married couple much joy.

Noah Betzner

One of the oldest citizens of Kitchener, if not the oldest, passed away this morning at his late residence, at 139 East Lancaster street, in the person of Noah Betzner, born on March 22, 1836, he was well on in his 92nd year, and in full possession of all his faculties up to three or four weeks ago, when he was compelled to take to his bed. During his short illness he received at the hands of his family and other friends the watchful care due a father, a neighbour and a friends, the end coming this morning at an early hour, without pain and without apprehension of any kind.

The late Mr. Betzner was the son of the late John B. Betzner and Magdalena Eby and a great grandson of Samuel Betzner, who was born in Wurtemburg, Germany, in 1738, and who migrated to Canada about the year 1800, taking up land on the Grand River, opposite Doon, where the monument to the Waterloo County pioneers now stands. The late Mr. Betzner was proprietor of this farm during the first five years of his married life, after which he moved to the "Jacob Sherk" farm on the Grand River between Kitchener and Breslau. In 1898 Mr. Betzner gave up farming and moved to Kitchener, where he has resided ever since.

On March 3, 1857, he was married to Barbara Schneider, who predeceased him just two years ago, and eight years beyond their 60th anniversary. Three children died in infancy, the surviving members of the family being Mrs. Isaac Brubacher, Mrs. Moses Shantz, Mr. Oliver Betzner, Mrs. Oliver Hallman, and Mr. Ephraim Betzner, all of this city and vicinity. There also survive fourteen grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. To all of these sympathy is extended on the loss of a kind and Christian father, whose memory will be revered by all who knew him.

In the death of Mr. Betzner the community loses one of the few links which still remained to bind us to early life in Waterloo County. He was one of the original members of the M.B.C. congregation, organized in the early seventies, under the guidance and inspiration of Rev. Solomon Eby. He was a consistent member of that church ever since, was faithful and even severe with himself in his religious duties, and was an inspiration to many by his upright and exemplary life and his Christian testimony given many times and often both in public gatherings and in private life. Truly this was a good man, - good in the face of the many trials, difficulties and disappointments of a long life.

The funeral will take place from his late residence on Saturday afternoon at two o'clock and will proceed to the M.B.C. church for service and to the East End cemetery where internment will take place.

Death Calls Barbara Snyder Wife of Noah Betzner In Her Eighty Seventh Year

On Sunday morning at her late residence on Lancaster Street, there passed away in the person of Barbara (Snyder) Betzner, daughter of the late Moses E. Snyder, and wife of Noah Betzner, one of the few remaining people who are able and competent to speak of pioneer days in Waterloo County. Although Mrs. Betzner was within five days of her eighty-seventh birthday and somewhat feeble due to her advanced age, her death was quite unexpected and particularly so as she arose and partook of her breakfast on Sunday as usual. She passed away as she wished to do in her chair and under circumstances which would bring the least inconvenience to those most dear to her.

Mrs. Betzner was the eldest of a large family of eleven children, all of whom were well known in Waterloo County, and of whom only three survive, namely Moses C. Snyder of Gloversville, N.Y., and the Misses Hannah and Lucena of Kitchener. On March 3rd 1857, the deceased was married to Noah Betzner who was brought up on the now historic farm on the Grand River opposite Doon. Mr. Betzner, who is in his ninetieth year, will have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in this great bereavement, breaking as it does a companionship of over sixty-eight years.
The late Mrs. Betzner was the mother of eight children, three of whom died in infancy, the other five remaining to mourn the loss of a good Christian mother. They are Mrs. Mary Ann Brubacher, Mrs. Magdalena Shantz and Mrs. Zelinda Hallman, of Kitchener, Mr. Oliver Betzner, on the Breslau Road, and Mr. Ephrain Betzner, of Conestogo. Fourteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren also survive.

The funeral will be held on the afternoon of Wednesday, a short service at her late residence at two o'clock to be followed by a service at the Bethany Mennonite Church, of which congregation she was one of the original members. Internment will take place in the cemetery of the First Mennonite Church on King Streete East. The passing of this grand old lady will be mourned by many besides those of her immediate family and the sympathy of the whole community will go to those who were nearest and dearest to her.

Mrs. Samuel Hallman

A pioneer of Waterloo County and a resident who through a long and useful life served well her day and generation, has been removed in the passing of Mary Snyder, widow of the late Samuel Hallman. Her death occurred on Sunday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Oliver Betzner, near Breslau, after a brief illness of about a month's duration. Although in her 88th year she enjoyed excellent health up to a few weeks ago, when owing to general debility due to old age she gradually weakened until she passed away.

She had attained the advanced age of 87 years, 7 months and 3 days.

Rev. Jacob Hallman, "the eldest in the family, was born November 18th, 1803. In 1822 he, in company with Mr. Lutz, walked to Canada and made Waterloo County, Ontario, his home for about two years, then he returned to his native state where he remained until the following spring when he and his father and family moved to Canada. Some time after his arrival he was married to Eva, daughter of Christian and Polly (Ruth) Strome (Then spelled Strohm). She was born September 9th, 1805, and died July 11th, 1886. Soon after their marriage they moved on their farm in Wilmot Township, about two and one-half miles north of New Dundee where they resided until their deaths. In 1837 he was called to the ministry of the Mennonite Church which body he served faithfully for over forty years. His sermons were always plain, practical, and accompanied with a strong appeal to the younger members of the congregation to live up to the teachings of the Scriptures. His great and only desire was that he might pass the rest of his days in the humble yet honorable service in the ministry of the Lord, to which he was so sincerely attached. He died March 23rd, 1878. His family consisted of six children"

HALLMAN.-March 23rd, in Waterloo Co., Ont., of dropsy, Pre. JACOB HALLMAN, aged 74 years, 5 months and 4 days. He served as minister 42 years. He was much beloved by his neighbors, his fellow-ministers, and the whole church. He had peace with God, the church and his fellow man. He was firmly grounded on the Rock and Chief Corner-stone, Jesus Christ. His walk and conversation were what he preached, humility. He bore his sufferings with patience, and leaves a sorrowing widow and three married children to mourn their loss. The entire church and his fellow-ministers also feel that they have sustained a severe loss, but they feel confident too, that their loss is his eternal gain. He was buried on the 25th at Blenheim burying-ground, where a large number of people were present. As he himself had requested, Bro. Amos S. Cressman preached at the house and Moses Bauman and George Schmidt at the meeting-house, from the text which he himself had selected, 2 Tim. 4:6-8. The hymn sung was also his own selection from the Skippack Hymn Book, Page 273,

David Snyder, "was born March 29th, 1799. On March 18h, 1823, he was married to Leah Baumann (No. 44). She was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania, June 6th, 1804, and died at Freeport, Ontario, April 24th, 1876. They resided at Freeport, Ontario where he was busily engaged in tilling his large farm which is now cut up into a number of smaller farms. Here he resided until his death which took place December 2nd, 1875."
