    ______________

    THE LATE JOHN SCHILLING

The report of Mr. John Schilling's death came as a shock to the community. Several days ago, he was in good health and pursuing his calling. He contrasted a heavy cold, followed by pneumonia and the extinguishment of the spark of life.

Mr. Schilling was a good type of citizen. An intelligent, industrious mechanie, and a home-owner. One of the large group to whom Berlin owes much for its position as a business and residential centre. With others of his standing, he was ever ready to assist and promote its industrial, civic and educational undertakings.

He had served Berlin for many years on the School Board, the City Council and Board of Health. Perhaps his first training to rise and express his thoughts was obtained in the lodge-room of the I.O.F., of which he was a devoted member.

His was a practical mind-sturdy and, in a manly way, independent. He thought for himself and was unafraid to express his convictions. This may explain the hold he had upon the esteem of the majority of his fellow citizens His counrel and assistance will be missed by the Conservative party, of which he was a staunch and deveted member.

    John ran his race well.

The sympathy of thousands of his admirers and friends will go out to his bereaved wife and family in their sudden and irreparable loss.

    Notes:

    Fatal Accident in Waterloo

A fatal accident occurred in the town of Waterloo last Tuesday. It appears that Mr. Fred Hopp, a farmer, was that day delivering produce at Mr. Cook's warehouse, Waterloo, and that while thus engaged the horses started. He attempted to hold them when he was knocked down and dragged until his shoulder came into contact with a post. His shoulder was smashed and several ribs broken, one of which penetrated the lung. He lingered til about midnight, when he succumbed to the injuries received. He was aged about 46 years, and leaves a wife, and five children to mourn his fearfully sudden taking off.
