    __________________________

August and Charles Boehmer in the sixties owned a hardware, stove and tinware store at 58 East King Street. In 1874, they began manufacturing paper boxes, after selling the hardware stock to C. E. Moyer and the tinware shop to Peter and Henry Hymmen. Hymmen Bros. first leased quarters in the Canadian block from J. Y. Shantz, and later on in the Germania block. Hardware and plumbing were added to their lines. In 1892, Peter Hymmen bought his brother's share. In 1906, he opened up West King Street as a business section, erecting a large block at No. 158. Mr. Hymmen was active until shortly before his death in 1930. Prior to his departure, his sons, H. I.. Hymmen and Homer Hymmen, had been their father's associates and now direct the enterprise. After Henry Hymmen left the firm he was for four years with H. Wolfhard & Co., and then bought C. E. Moyer's hardware stock. He carried on in the Dunke block until 1900, when he was appointed superintendent of the waterworks. George Potter, who for many years had been with John Fennell & Son, bought Mr. Hymmen's stock, and is still doing business at the old stand.

    NATURE'S NOBLE MAN CALLED HOME

DEATH OF AUGUST BOEHMER IS MOURNED BY BERLIN CITIZENS AT LARGE

SURVIVED OPERATION ONLY A FEW HOURS

The death of Mr. August Boehmer, 92 Queen St. North, which took place at the Berlin and Waterloo Hospital about four o'clock on Tuesday afternoon, has cast a gloom over the town, for the deceased was respected as one of the most honorable and useful citizens of Berlin.

Mr. Boehmer had been unwell for a little over a year and diagnosis revealed the presence of a growth in the abdomen. Of late he had been failing more rapidly as the best medical skill could not check the affliction. However with his characteristic adherence to duty he came down town each morning to get the mail and then went out to the factory on Water Street. But on Friday he was compelled to leave his business duties and since then was confined to his room. His condition fast grew more serious and as the only resort which would possibly prolong or save his life an operation to remove the obstruction, was decided upon. But he was too weak, and the trouble was too far advanced. His system could not stand the shock. Though the operation was successful, and though he rallied and expressed himself as greatly relieved from the pain he had been suffering, he could not survive and passed away about three hours after the operation had been performed.

The hour of the funeral has been fixed at two o'clock on Friday, from the family residence, 92 Queen St. North, to the Benton Street Baptist Church and Mount Hope Cemetery.

The last August Boehmer, who passed away in his 62nd year, was a native of this township - practically of Berlin.

He was a son of Henry Boehmer and was born about a mile out of the corporation limits, on the Mannheim Road. He received his education in the Berlin schools and early I life entered business as a general merchant. Later he conducted a hardware business, and about 35 years ago he and his brother Charles entered into partnership as A & C Boehmer in the manufacture of paper boxes. They have been eminently successful and are well-to-do.

38 years ago the late Mr. Boehmer was married to Catharine Kalbfleisch, who, with a family of nine children, survive. They are Mrs. H. Jarvis, of Cleveland, Norman, George, Mrs. H. Hymmen, Arthur, Oscar, Edna, Gertrude and Emma, all of Berlin. The four surviving brothers are Charles, Reinhart, Philip and Herman, all of Berlin.

A good character is a man's best asset. That was Mr. Boehmer's sincere belief and he lived to it. When he made a promise it was fulfilled. He was sincere and he wanted others to be true to him in word and in deed. He was the very soul of conscientiousness and those who knew him best respected him most highly.

A neighbor and friend this morning paid a tribute to his memory as follows:

"August was an intimate friend and companion of mine. He was one of the most exact men I ever knew. Everything with him was done in order and in season. Anything he said "Yes" to, stood as long as life. There was no coming around next day with excuses to back away. He never started anything that he did not finish, and then he was ready to pay for it. Berlin loses one of its finest types of citizens in his death."

Mr. Boehmer was a believer in, and advocate of the principle of Protection of Canadian industries, but was not actively connected with any political movement. He was a man of most retiring disposition a great lover of home. Very seldom did he leave it evenings, and it was something most exceptional indeed that kept him from retiring at nine o'clock.

He has been for many years an active worker in the Benton St. Baptist Church and a most liberal contributor to its work. but his giving was always unostentatious.

His memory will long be honored; his good name revered as a man of whom it can be truly said in the language of the poet Pope: -

"An honest man's the noblest work of God."

To the bereaved widow and members of the family this News Record extends its condolences in this hour of bereavement and affliction.

In the death of the late Mr. August Boehmer, which took place at the Berlin-Waterloo Hospital on Tuesday alternoon, Berlin his lost one of its most valuable and esteemed citizens. The deceased has been in ill- health for about a year, suffering from a growth in the stomach but he has been able to be about until last Friday afternoon when he took to his bed. After a consultation the physicians decided that his only hope for recovery was to undergo an operation which he consented to. The operation was performed about noon Tuesday but owing to the serious condition of the bowels he was unable to pull through and death relieved him of his sufferings about 3.45 o'clock.
