- Dr. MacGachen Long III, Dies at 64
Illness of five years, recently aggravated by a fall in which he sustained a fractured hip, proved fatal to Dr. Archibald M. MacGachen, 64, retired dentist, of 704 E. State St., Thursday evening, Feb. 8, 1940.
Dr. MacGachen was born in Galt, Canada, and studied dentistry at Buffalo and Philadelphia dental colleges. He came to Ithaca shortly after graduation and practiced with the late Dr. J. R. Crawford for a short time before opening his own office. He had practiced nearly 40 years when he was forced to retire because of ill health after a stroke.
During the Christmas holidays he fell in his home and fractured a hip.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Esther Bucklin MacGachen; three daughters, the Misses Caroline, Esther, and Lucy, all of Ithaca; two sisters, Miss Annie MacGachen of Long Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Frank Norris of Toronto, and one brother, Frederick, of Montreal.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p. m., Monday, Feb. 12. at the Baldwin-Davis funeral home, 421 N. Aurora St., with the Rev. Frederick H. Allen, associate pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Temporary burial will be made in a Lake View Cemetery vault until spring when burial will be made in the family plot at Warsaw.
Dr. MacGachen was a member of Hobasco Lodge and of the national, state and county dental associations. He was also active in Democratic County Committee affairs and served as an alderman from the Second Ward. He was sworn in Nov. 24, 1911.
