  Gibson, James, farmer. Owns 50 acres of land, Lot 20, Germany Co. Tract, valued at $6,000. Is a native of Scotland. Born 1832. Settled in Canada, 1854, and in this county, 1880. P. O. address Berlin. Historical Atlas of Waterloo & Wellington, Ontario 1881-1877, pg 12 ___________________ James Gibson, Esq., one of Berlin's most esteemed citizens, died suddenly at his residence "Spring Valley" on Saturday morning. A few years ago he had an attack of la grippe which impaired his health. He was out to Berlin on Thursday and on Friday afternoon took a walk on the verandah of his residence. It is thought that he contracted a cold while out on Friday and he died of heart failure at 2.30 o'clock on Saturday morning. Mr. Gibson was born in Scotland and was educated at Edinburgh. He engaged in business at Liverpool but health failing, he came to Canada and located in Peel township, Wellington county. About fifteen years ago be removed to Berlin. Mrs. Gibson, six daughters and three sons survive him. Two of the daughters are married, Mrs. F. Colquhoun, Waterloo and Mrs. H. F. Pearson, of Berlin, while Miss Nora Gibson, the talented elocutionist, Misses Madge, Bella and Minnie are at home. Thomas, one of the sons, is at home, another is living at Regina, N. W. T., and the youngest son John is attending college at Pickering. Mr. Gibson was an adherent of the Presbyterian church and a life-long Conservative, always taking a very active part in politics. His remains were interred in Mount Hope cemetery on Monday in the presence of a large number of friends who had come to pay their last tribute of respect to the deceased.
