  One of these painful events took place in Galt on Sunday last, the family so sadly bereaved being that of Mr. John A. VonGunten, watch-maker. It appears that on the afternoon named his son Carl Edmund, aged some eight years, went to Sunday School as was his usual custom, and on his return therefrom asked his mother - Mr. VonGunten had gone to Preston - if he might go out with some of his companions. Permission being given, they started off; and unfortunately they took the direction of the west bank of the dam. At a spot in the mouth of the old canal there is a sort of raft moored which the coopers use in steeping their hoops, and the boys, or some of them, got on the raft. While playing, some on shore and some on the raft, a cry was suddenly raised that "Eddie was in the water," and upon seeing his hands raised above the surface his frightened companions ran as fast as they could for their own homes, instead of giving the alarm at some of the houses in the neighborhood. When the alarm was given the body of poor little Eddie was quickly recovered; but by this time some twenty minutes had elapsed, and although those who first drew him from the water thought they felt a flicker of life all efforts to resuscitate him were in vain. It is needless for us to say that the blow to the parents was a terrible one, or that they have the sympathy of the entire town with them in their sore affliction. The deceased was a sturdy, bright little fellow, and a universal favorite with his companions. His funeral on Monday evening was very largely attended. Galt Reporter May 28 1887 pg 1
