Family Deserter Dies Alone At Quincy Sunday
Benjamin Stauffer, an inmate of the Plumas County hospital for the past fourteen years, died in that institution Sunday morning following a stroke of paralysis. He was buried Monday in Quincy cemetery.
Stauffer, who was born in Canada, left his wife and six children in that country and came to the United States thirty-five years ago. Following an absence of ten years he communicated with his family for the first time, writing them from Crescent Mills, where he had settled. After a few letters were interchanged however, the family again lost all trace of him. Mrs. Stauffer died in Canada about two years ago.
Recently two sons came to the United States from Canada, one, Fred Stauffer, locating in Sacramento, from where he wrote to the postmaster at Crescent Mills and learned his father was confined in the County hospital near Quincy. He came to the hospital and, for the first time since he was a little boy, met and visited with his father..
Sunday the County officials wired him of his father's death and he returned to Quincy to attend the funeral.
Coroner J. F. Moody had charge of the remains. The pall bearers were Roy Droedge, L. C. Remick, Will Johnson and Chas. Myers.
