Notes |
- In 1853, William Miller, a descendant of United Empire Loyalists and a distinguished Galt lawyer, was appointed the first judge of the newly-formed County of Waterloo, and served in that capacity for thirty-five years. Miller, who was born in Niagara-on-the-Lake, was articled to a law firm in Niagara. He was called to the bar at an early age and practiced in Dundas, later moving to Galt. He was a community-minded citizen and served as an elder of Knox's Presbyterian Church for twenty-eight years.

JUDGE MILLER DEAD.
A Well-known Citizen of Galt Expires Very Suddenly.
GALT, June 17.-Judge Miller died suddenly at his residence here to-day at about 12 o'clock. He was seized with a fainting spell while taking a walk through the grounds surrounding his residence. Medical aid was at once summoned, but he never raillied and passed away without a struggle shortly afterwards. Heart failure was the cause of death. The deceased, although in his 81st year at the time of death, continued to discharge the actual duties of his position as senior judge for Waterloo County until two years ago, when he resigned owing to defective hearing. He was held in the highest esteem by all classes of the community. Of the members of his family there are living at present two sons and three daughters, viz., W. Nicholas Miller, barrister, Toronto; Henry Miller of Galt, Miss Carrie Miller of Galt, Mrs. Z. A. Lash, Toronto, and Mrs. J. B. Lash, Regina, N. W.T.
