- SHANTZ, Lorne R. - On Friday, Jan. 1, 1982 at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital, Lorne Raeburn Shantz, age 76 years, of 30 Farmbrook Place, Kitchener.
Beloved husband of the former Lorraine Schneider; dear father of Marlene Brooke of Los Angeles, Calif., Lorne Ray of RR 2, Petersburg, Charles and Fred, both of Kitchener; grandfather of Dawn Bronte, Lorne, Jeffrey, Kevin and Tracey Shantz. Predeceased by three brothers,Abiah, Areeli, Abner.
He was born in Plattsville on March 16, 1905 a son of the late Jacob M. Shantz; and the former Mary Ann Bingeman, and had been a resident of Kitchener since 1925. He was Advertising and Public Relations Manager for J. M. Schneider Inc. at the time of his retirement in 1970.
He was elected to the Kitchener Public School Board in 1946, was Chairman of Physical Health and Safety Committee in 1947, Board Chairman from 1948 to 1949 and again in 1953. He originated Church and School Week in 1947, promoted the observance of Church and School Week throughout Ontario and later throughout Canada. He was president of the Ontario Association of Public School Trustees for two years and a director of the Ontario Urban and Rural Trustees Association. In 1959 he was elected to the Waterloo County Board of Education and was a member of the Building and Sites Committee from 1969 to 1981. He had a total of 36 years continuous service with the school board and his guiding principle in every decision he made was "Will the child benefit".
He was a member of the K-W Kiwanis Club since 1954 with 15 years of perfect attendance; a member of the Retired Business and Professional Men's Club for 10 years and a former moderator of the Senior Citizens Program on Grand River Cable TV for four years. He was also a member of Grand River Lodge 151, AF & AM.
Friends may call at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, after 7 p.m. this evening, until noon on Monday, then at Bethany Missionary Church, for the funeral service on Monday at 2 p.m. Interment Woodland Cemetery. Rev. John Hamilton and Rev. Clarence Hunking will conduct the service

VETERAN TRUSTEE LORNE SHANTZ DIES AT 76
Lorne Shantz, a Waterloo County Board of Education trustee for Kitchener for 36 years died Friday. Shantz of 30 Farmbrook Pl. was 76. He was the originator of the Church and School Week in 1947 and promoted it throughout the Province. It was a program in which teachers and visiting clergy helped recruit students for church and Sunday school.
Elected to the Kitchener Public School Board in 1946, he served as Chairman in 1948-49 and in 1953. He was president of the Ontario Association of Public School Trustees for a two year period and served as director of the Ontario Urban and Rural Trustees Association. In 1969, he was elected as Waterloo County Public School Board Trustee and was a member of the Board's Building and Sites Committee from 1969 to 1981.
During election campaigns in 1978 as a school trustee he said the Bible should be the first book in the school system and opposed bilingualism in the public schools. He worked for J. M. Schneider Inc. for 41 years, until he retired in 1970 as Advertising and Public Relations Manager. He was a member of the K-W Kiwanis Club since 1954, a member of the K-W Sales and Ad Club and the Retired Business and Professional Men's Club.
During his retirement he hosted a cable television program for senior citizens. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine, a daughter and three sons. The funeral is to be held Monday
