Beloved husband of Betty Louise (Becker) Schneider and the dear and devoted father of Gregory and his wife Robyn, Pamela and her husband Steven Sittler, Christopher and his wife Susan, Phillip and his wife Amanda and James, all of the Twin Cities and a son, Stephen of Toronto. His grandchildren include five granddaughters, Emily,Amy, Andrea, Christyn and Katelyn and one grandson, Clayton. He is also survived by a sister, Brita Hazell of Ashland, Ore. and a brother, Herbert and his wife Betty of Waterloo.
Howard was an active member of the Board of Directors of the Schneider Corporation since 1957. As well as being Vice-President and Director of Research and Development for the company until his retirement earlier this year, he was also a member of the Technical Research Committee of the Canadian Meat Council.
A grandson of the company founder, John Metz Schneider, Howard began his career at J. M. Schneider Inc. 38 years ago as a summer student before joining the sales force in 1950. He was recognized for outstanding sales achievement in 1952 and 1953. His years as a sales representative were followed in various aspects of distribution of product to customers. In 1962, he became involved in product development and in the role of Development Supervisor was responsible for special projects and new product research.
In 1972, he was appointed to Vice-President and Director of Research and Development. Since then his innovative and creative achievements in the area of provincial and federal government research contracts and new product development have made a significant contribution to the success of the company.
Besides his professional career he has had a number of outside interests. He was a lifelong member of the Church of the Good Shepherd (Swedenborgian) where he was active in the Sunday school, the choir and as Chairman of the Church Board. He was a member of the Kitchener Conestoga Rotary Club since 1976 serving as president in 1982/1983. He was also a past member of the Board of Directors of St. Margaret's School in Elora and St. John's Kilmarnock School in Waterloo, and a member of various fund raising committees in the community.
He was an avid skier all his life, starting at Chicopee Ski Club where he was club champion for a number of years. Since that time he has enjoyed skiing with his family at Devils Glen Country Club near Collingwood serving on the Board of Directors for a number of years. Another lifelong interest was boating in the Georgian Bay area.
Since his retirement, Howard has been living at his farm in the Collingwood area. A private family service of remembrance will be held at the Black Walnut Farm near Collingwood on Sunday, April 2, with the Rev. Paul Zacharias and Rev. Eric Allison officiating. This will be followed by a public memorial service for Howard's many friends and business associates at the Church of the Good Shepherd corner of Queen and Margaret Avenue, Kitchener, on Saturday, April 9 at 3 p.m. with a reception following in the church hall. At the request of the family, there will be no visitation since cremation has already taken place.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to the memorial Organ Fund of the Church of the Good Shepherd or to the Palliative Care Service at K-W Hospital would be appreciated and may be placed through the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo (745-8445)
