Death of Rev. D.A. Duff - It is with feelings of extreme regret that we this week record the death of Rev. D.A. Duff, pastor of the U.P. church in this town. The melancholy event, which was not unexpected, occurred on Sabbath last at midnight. As our readers are aware, Mr. Duff had a severe attack of dysentery about a month ago, and although he recovered from the original ailment, his constitution was weakened to such an extent that other complications followed, and despite everything that medical skill and loving friends could do, about a week ago all hope of recovery was abandoned, and he continued to sink gradually until Sunday night, when he passed quietly away. It will be remembered that some two years ago the deceased had a serious attack of typhoid fever, which laid him low for several months. There can be little doubt that the protracted illness through which he passed at that time made serious inroads upon an otherwise robust constitution and rendered him unable to cope with the ravages of subsequent maladies.
The deceased was a native of the United States and was born at St. Clairsville, Ohio, in 1845, being only in his 43rd year at the time of his death. He was educated at Franklin College in his native state, and was attending that institution when the great civil war broke out. He was a mere lad at this time, possessed of all the impetuosity of youth and imbued with patriotic fervor, and during the latter part of the conflict he joined the forces of the victorious North and served in the ranks till the end of the great struggle. Returning to college, he shortly afterwards graduated. Having decided to enter the ministry of the U.P. Church he took a course at the theological Seminary at Alleghany, and was ordained when 21 years of age. His first charge was at Geneva, N.Y., where he ministered with acceptance for several years. Receiving a call to Stewart's Station. Penn., he removed thither, where he remained for ten years, when he received a call from the U.P. congregation in this town, which had been without a pastor since the death of the late lamented Dr. Andrews, some two years previously. It was in the fall of 1880, we believe, that Mr. Duff removed to Galt, and during his seven years pastorate he proved himself a zealous and indefatigable servant of the Great Master. He was universally beloved by his flock, and being possessed of a broad catholic spirit, he made many warm friends outside of his own congregation. A man of rare culture he was a most pleading and interesting companion. Passionately fond of music, he did much to cultivate a love for that art amongst the members of his own congregation, as well as assisting at entertainments of a charitable nature connected with other churches. The deceased was married with three children to mourn their irreparable loss, two little ones having preceded him. We join in extending to the bereaved widow and family our heartfelt sympathy in the hour of their affliction.
The funeral took place yesterday afternoon to Mount View Cemetery, and was one of the largest ever witnessed in this locality. The funeral obsequies took place at the church, and were conducted by Rev. Robert Acheson, a former pastor of the congregation, who paid a noble tribute to the memory of his deceased brother. He was assisted by nearly all the clergy of the town as well as several from a distance.
