Passing of Fergus Anderson
A Prominent Pioneer Goes to His Reward
This week we are called upon to record the death of one of the early pioneers of this section, in the person of Fergus Anderson, who passed away at noon on Tuesday, May 19, in his 88th year. Of Scottish birth, first seeing the light of day at the foothills of Chieviot, where his father followed the honorable calling of a shepherd, he came to Canada with his parents in 1840, and had resided on the farm on which he died ever since. The family
comprised four brothers and two sisters, viz., Fergus, Fenwick, Robert, Jane (Mrs. Orr) and Mary (Mrs. Walter Anderson), all of whom are now deceased except Mrs. Anderson. The subject of this brief sketch was one of the oldest, most widely known and highly respected of the early pioneers, and had witnessed the passing of nearly all his associates. In religion he was a Presbyterian and in politics followed the bent of his own inclination. It was in church affairs, however, that he figured most prominently, uniting with Stanley St. Church in the year 1841, a fact which probably gave him precedence in church membership throughout the whole of the Paris Presbytery. In 1858 he was elected an elder, a position held by his father before him, and remained in that connection until death severed the tie. He was also clerk of session for a number of years, and always discharged his duties acceptably. Deceased was twice married, uniting with Mary Black in the early forties. His partner predeceased him 33 years.
Three years later he married Jane Barrie, who, with two daughters, Grace and Mary, survive to mourn their loss. Mr. Anderson was a kind neighbor and a man of great force of character. He had travelled some in his earlier days and being a close observer was able to converse with marked intelligence and deep interest. The funeral, which takes place to Ayr cemetery this (Thursday) afternoon, will doubtless be very largely attended. The pall-bearers selected are all old friends and neighbors, viz., Messrs. Walter Murray, Chas. Muma, Jas. Lillico, J. S. Black, A. E. Laurie and J. L. Black.
