    • St. Jacobs is a post village on the Conestogo River, and on the stage road from Berlin to Elmira, distant eight miles from Berlin. Two daily stages connect it with Berlin and Elmira. The village contains two churches, a flouring mill, woolen mill, drug and book store, stove store, general store, three blacksmith shops, a shoe store, two hotels, a harness shop, two tailor shops, two cooper shops, a tarnnery, creamery, two carriage shops, a cabinet snop, lumber yard, and 500 inhabitants....

      Valentine Herres opened the first hotel.
