- DEATH OF MR. JAMES POLLACK, P.L.S.
We have before referred to the serious illness from which this gentleman was suffering, and knew that although at times apparently a little better, there was no hope of the disease being conquered. On Wednesday, bleeding from the cancerous affection of the throat again set in, and despite all that could be done by medical skill, continued so severely that death ensued at 4 o'clock on Thursday morning.
Deceased was born in Leith, Scotland, on the 18th December, 1809, and emigrated to this country some time about 1842. For a few ears he taught school in Lower Canada, but being possessed of an excellent mathematical education, he abandoned school teaching for surveying, and having duly passed in the year 1849 he came to Galt, where he was since continuously resided. Of a very quiet disposition, Mr. Pollock took but little interest in municipal or political affairs. Widely known and very much respected, he enjoyed the respect of the members of the community in which he had spent so many years of his life. Deceased was married twice, his son James, a very clever young man, leaving Galt about the commencement of the American was, and strangely, since that time, noting has been heard of him. His second marriage to the lady who now survives him resulted in the birth of three children, one of whom died in infancy, another being drowned in Blain's dam while attending the Collegiate Institute, leaving only the one son surviving. The funeral will take place today (Friday) from his late residence, west Main Street, to Galt Cemetery.
