      Dr. George Perry Sylvester died in Toronto in his 71st year. A graduate of Trinity Medical College in 1874, he practiced in Galt for twenty years, moving to Toronto in 1894. He was one of the best known of the staff in Grace Hospital, where he had been in attendance for the last twenty years.

      'Unprecedented' heritage project sees century-old slate roof replaced

      CAMBRIDGE Pieces missing, leaking and faded by more than a century of sun that's how the slate roof of a 10-unit row housing structure on St. Andrew Street in Galt looked just a few months ago.

      Thanks to an "unprecedented" undertaking requiring collaboration between the various owners, and a helping hand from heritage funds, the roof has been reborn....

      Built in 1885 to house workers at a nearby mill, the 58 to 76 St. Andrew Street row house '96 known as St. Andrew's Terraces '96 was constructed at a cost of about $4,000. The money was put up by physician G.P. Sylvester and J.W. Ward, a local painter and real estate agent.

      It was designated under the Ontario Heritage Act in 1989, in part due to its designed slate roof, as well as red and yellow brick....

      Dr. G. P. Sylvester, Toronto


      Early Sunday morning in Wellesley Hospital, Toronto, the death oc- curred of Dr. Geo. P. Sylvester of 79 Isabella Street. Deceased,, who was 71 years of age, had been ill for several days, and was operated on Saturday afternoon. Dr. Sylvester was born in Bowmanville, and received his early education at Dr. Tassie's school in Galt. He then attended Trinity University. He practised first in Galt, coming to Toronto in 1894, where he subsequently attained prominence as a surgeon. He continued in this branch of the profession until about 7 years ago, when he retired from active practice. Dr. Sylvester was a member of the Granite Club and the Royal Canadian Yacht Club. He was an Anglican, a member of St. Paul's Church, Bloor Street East, and a member of Zetland Masonic Lodge.. He leaves a widow who was Miss Reid, daughter of the late Richard Reid of Bowmanville, and three daughters, Mrs. Frank P. Smallpiece, Calgary; Mrs, E. U. Reid, Canton, China; and Mrs. E. Harvey Ellis, Toronto.
