Notes |
- Death of A. T. H. Ball, Esq.
About a year has elapsed since we announced in the Reporter that a gentlemen known to almost everyone n the town, Mr. A. T. H. Ball, of the firm of Ball & Ball, barristers, had been suddenly stricken with paralysis. Since then, Mr. Ball has been a confirmed invalid, having only been able to enjoy a drive out on very few occasions; and on Thursday morning of last week another attack rendered him unconscious, in which condition he remained until death supervened shortly before midnight.
Mr. Ball was born in Niagara Township being the son of the late George Ball. He was educated at Niagara, afterwards studying law in the office of Mr. M. C. Cameron, Toronto. After passing most successful examinations, Mr. Ball came to Galt in the year 1855, and, in company with Mr. Æmilius Irving, now of Hamilton, opened an office for the practice of law. The partnership continued until Mr. Irving was appointed Solicitor of the Great Western, when that gentleman removed to Hamilton. About the year 1872 Mr. Ball took his nephew, Mr. G. W. H. Ball, into partnership, and the firm of Ball & Ball became one of the best known in legal circles in Western Ontario.
Although taking but little part in public affairs, Mr. Ball evinced great interest in everything tending to the social or material advancement of the town, and never let an opportunity of quietly doing good pass by. He was a thoroughly studious business man, careful and conscientious in every walk of life, but at the same time one of the most genial and pleasant of companions. In politics he was a Liberal Conservative in the true acceptation of the term, and in religious matters was a most devoted member of Trinity church.
Mr. Ball was united in marriage to the second daughter of the late John Miller, Esq., barrister, who, with three children, two sons and one daughter, survive him. the eldest son, Frank, has made a most creditable record for himself in the Royal Navy, while the second son, Arthur G., is studying at the University.
The funeral of Mr. Ball took place on Monday afternoon, the business places in the town being closed as a mark of respect of our old townsman. The pallbearers were Walter Dickson, Esq., Galt; Rev. G. C. McKenzie, Brantford; Æmilius Irving, Esq., Hamilton; Dr. J. B. Lundy, Hugh McCulloch, Esq. and James Warnock, Esq., Galt. Two former pastors of Trinity church, and warm personal friends of the deceased, in the persons of Canon Dumoulin, of Toronto, and Canon Curran, of Hamilton, were present and assisted Rev. Mr. Ridley in conducting the services. The choir of the church also rendered some appropriate music during the services, the solemn dirge of the "dead march" being given from the organ as the cortege passed out of the edifice on its way to the cemetery.
