McAree (Elizabeth St. Clair). Resting at the York Chapel of Turner and Porter, 2357 Bloor St. West, from 6 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral service 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon, Interment Park Lawn Cemetery. Kitchener-Waterloo Record Kitchener, Ontario, Canada Tuesday, March 04, 1958 ________________ EX-MAGISTRATE E POLSON DIES IN TORONTO AT 80 Special to The Record TORONTO - Former magistrate Hugh Robert Polson - the Will Rogers of the Waterloo County' bench until his retirement in 1952 - died in Queen Elizabeth Hospital here last night. A native of Galt, he was 80. Mr. Polson, who. was sent to Kitchener on a 10 day Assignment and remained 10½ years, was highly respected throughout Waterloo County and district. NOTED FOR HOMELY WIT His approach to the law-a mixture of rule-of-the-thumb and golden. rule won him the high regard of policemen, lawyers, court officials and the defendants who appeared before him. Mr. Polson was particularly noted for his kindly wit and homespun philosophy. Many drab hearing was livened by his wry witticisms. Mr. Polson was, in the provincial service 38 years, including a period as assistant inspector of legal offices and 19 years as magistrate. As a youth he worked his way to Great Britain on a cattle boat. On his return he took a job as night operator for the Galt telephone system. Later he worked in. Ontario and Alberta as a telephone lineman and "trouble shooter." A former baseball player and umpire in the old Trolley League, and a former hockey referee, Mr. Polson also had played hockey and football, bowled and curled. An avid sports fan, he also served as chairman of the Twin - City Softball Federation. FUNERAL ON THURSDAY He is survived by a son, Robert Hugh , Polson, Toronto, and two grandchildren. His wife, the former Cynthia Porter Mann of Waterloo, predeceased him. The body is resting at the York chapel of Turner and Porter Funeral Home, 2357 Bloor St. West, Toronto, where the service will be held Thursday at- 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in Park' Lawn Cemetery, Toronto,.
