J. T. Huber & Co. [Shoddy Mill] |
- Hindrik Schaefer
Old Hindrik was not a hobo, today we would call him an itinerant labourer. Just where he came from no one was sure but he worked at the J. T. Huber shoddy mill for a few years. He slept in the mill in the cold weather on the bales of shoddy or rags and when the weather was warm he slept in the baleshed, where the bales of shoddy were awaiting shipment. He was quite a good worker but no one had ever seen him wash or change his clothes, which seemed to be gathered out of the bales of rags sent in for shoddy. He ate his meals in the Huber kitchen. The younger men who worked in the mill decided to take him and give him a bath. They took him up to the tail-race, where the water was warm from the sun; stripped him and washed him. The boys said his socks had almost grown into his feet; as they were such rags. The shock of this bath and clean clothes must have been too much for him as he soon left Doon. One thing was he was kind hearted and liked children and to the small daughter of the house he taught her to count to ten in German.

J. T. Huber, Groceries and Crockery, King St. - Among the many industries in Berlin that call for special notice in a work of this kind is that which deals in the necessaries of life, principal among which is that of groceries. Berlin contains several first-class stores in this line of business, principal among the number being that of Mr. J.T. Huber, whose establishment is located on King Street in the American block. This business has been established for the past eight years, and since its inception has improved steadily and rapidly. The premises occupied are 23x75 feet in dimensions, and tastefully and appropriately fitted up for the requirements of the trade. A very large and well-selected stock of staple and fancy groceries is carried, consisting of the choicest brands of teas and coffees, pure spices, table delicacies, hermetically sealed goods, flour, etc. Mr. Huber makes a specialty of crockery and glassware, of which he carries a large fine stock, and sells at prices that defy competition. His trade extends throughout the town and country; he gives employment to four painstaking and competent assistants, and uses one team in the delivery of goods. Mr. Huber is a native of Canada, and a gentleman who understands most thoroughly every department of the business he now so successfully conducts. He is a man of indomitable energy and enterprise, and is held in high esteem in the community.
