_________
FREEPORT.
One of the eldest residents of this immediate vicinity passed away on Wed. Feb. 11th when the death occurred of Mr. Henry, Charles Gimbel, at the family residence, a protracted illness of some years, which had latterly rendered him utterly helpless.
Deceased had reached the advanced age of 82 years and 14 days, death being due to the general debilities of old age. He was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Barthel Gimbel, and was born in Germany, coming to this country at the early age of 10 yrs., since which time he has resided continuously in this community with the exception of few years spent in the state of Pennsylvania to S.A. in the early sixties. In 1871 he married to Miss Sara C. House of Erbsville and to them were born eleven children, Tillie, Mrs. A. Rahn of Preston, Emma, Mrs. I. Schiedel (deceased), Henry A. (deceased), Jacob of Preston, Willie H. (deceased), Abram on the old homestead, Marietta, Mrs. Ed. Shantz, Waterloo, Albert M. of The Prestolite Co. of Toronto, Katie (deceased), Adeline, Mrs. D. Gottfried, Freeport and John A. of Southampton. Soon after his marriage Mr. Gimbel purchased his father's farm near Freeport, now owned by his son Abram, where he resided for some thirty years, and very successfully followed his chosen pursuit of farming, until 17 years ago, when he retired and removed to this burg, to his late home, where he passed away.
The late Mr. Gimbel was a well-known and familiar figure in our midst for many years, where he was highly respected by all who knew him, and many there are who can testify, to his sterling integrity and high sense of honor in every sense of the word, and now that he is gone, he will be sadly missed, by a large circle of friends.
He was a charter member of the Preston Presbyterian Church where he was a regular attendant as long as health and strength permitted and in, politics he was a staunch Liberal and an ardent admirer of Sir Wilfred Laurier.
Besides his sorrowing widow and seven children there survive him twenty grandchildren and three great grandchildren, also one sister Mrs. Louise Lutz of this place and one brother David G. of Breslau.
The funeral services on Saturday, afternoon 14th., inst. both at his late home, and at Freeport Congregational Church, were conducted by his pastor, Rev. Mr. Johnston of Preston Presbyterian Church, who spoke very touchingly on "Heaven" "The Christian's Inheritance": A large number of relatives, friends and acquaintances were in attendance as a last mark of respect 'to one whom they had highly esteemed for many years. Following the services the remains were taken to Riverbank Cemetery to their last resting place, in the family plot. The pallbearers, were four sons, Jacob, Abram Albert and John and two son's-in-law, Mr. Ed. Shantz and Mr. D. Gottfried.
