FENIAN RAID VETERAN VICTIM OF MOTOR CAR
John Burnett Dies of Injuries Following Highway Accident
Severely injured when he was knocked down by a motor car on the Hamilton highway Saturday evening, John Burnett. aged 78, of 90 Lake Shore road, Mimico, passed away in the St. Joseph's hospital a few hours later. Burnett was crossing the road from the north side to the south, when a car proceeding east struck him and passed over his body. The motor car was driven by Victor Bailey, of 155 Clendenan avenue, who stated that he didn't see Burnett.
The latter had just left his home and was bound for the theatre across the road. He was dragged a distance from the spot where he was hit and was picked up directly opposite his front door. He was suffering from head and limb injuries, and front shock. He was removed to St. Joseph's hospital in a private ambulance. No responsibility was attached to Bailey. An inquest is to he held.
Deceased was born at Linwood. Ontario, and was a miller by trade. In religion he was a Methodist and as a young man he served in the Fenian raid. In recent years he lived at Guelph, removing to Mimico on the death of his wife two years ago. surviving are four brothers, Samuel of Listowel; William and Thomas. both of Linwood, and James, of Guelph; two sisters, Mrs. M. Stricker, of Beamsville, and Mrs. Jane Nurse, of Lynwood:. two chidren, A. H., of Mimico, and Iona. Mary, of Toronto, and one grand-child.
