Notes |
- Old Elmira Resident Dead - Mr. Stephen Winn, familiarly known as Dad, an old and respected resident of our village, passed to the great beyond at St. Joseph's Hospital, Guelph, on Tuesday afternoon. The deceased was born on Yong St., County of York, in 1832. He came to the "Queen's Bush" about the year 1847, one of a large family of boys and girls, and settled on a farm near Hawkesville. He was married to Elizabeth Hawke, who now mourns her separation from him, and together they lived a free, happy life, their latch string being always out to the young people of their neighborhood, especially during the sugar making season, the honey season, or when the green corn was fit for use and the pumpkin ready for pie. They moved to Elmira in 1901, and Mr. Winn enjoyed a cheerful, jovial spirit all his days, and fairly good health until a couple of months ago, when his last illness set in. To relieve him of severe pain an operation was advised and he went to a Guelph hospital for treatment. The operation was in a measure successful, but he was too feeble to recuperate and death came as a welcome release. Besides his sorrowing widow there survive him six children, namely - Mrs. Henry Peterson, St. Jacobs; Cosford, at home; Lawson and Joshun, New York; Mrs. Charles Christman, of Windsor; and Theophilus, of Preston. Of the older family only a sister, Mrs. J. B. Hughes, of Waterloo, is living.
The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock and the remains will be laid to rest in Hawkesville cemetery.
