  • Notes
    • Catherine then fell in love with one of the estate's field hands, Charles Germann. In a pique of rage directed at his daughter's choice, Scott turned his back on his adopted homeland. In 1867, with Canada's greatest years ahead, he sold his homes and holdings. Scott moved his entire family, save his eldest son Allan, who remained behind for a time to tie up business ends, to the far side of the world - Peterangi, on New Zealand's North Island.

There Scott turned to land acquisition again and purchased great tracts of farmland. He became one of New Zealand's wealthiest men. It appears too that Scott eventually was moved by the sadness of the lovelorn Catherine.

In 1871, four years after their sudden departure from New Hamburg, Scott gave Charles Germann leave to come to New Zealand and marry Catherine.
